Plums are a diverse group of species, with somewhere between 19 & 40 varieties depending upon whom you ask. We’re using what we consider to be the best to brew with. the Italian plum has beautiful dark skin & the flesh is perfect for fermentation. Plum Noir’s mild sweetness is derived no necessarily from the many malts we use. A bit of plum flavor is present as well as earthy, toasted grains, & hints of caramel with mild coffee overtones.

Black, not much head. Smells fruity, with some coffee notes. Nicely smooth palate. Flavor is fruity - definitely a note of plums or prune or something like that. Nice, rich coffee note. Perhaps a bit tannic, too. Dry, woody finish.

Bottle. Pours.near black with a beige head. Light dark fruity notes up front and in the aroma, with some lightly roasted malts and chocolate sweetness on the back end. Medium sweetness and relatively low bitterness. Good stuff.

Black pour with a tan head. Roasted malt aromas on the nose. Nice roasted malt flavor with a just a bit of plum on the palate. Interesting concept but the plum character is very subtle in my opinion. Still a good porter, but if you go into this expecting big plum flavor you’re going to be disappointed.

Pours black with just a hint of ruby at the bottom of the glass when held to the light. Thin head of beige foam that fell fast to a thin film and left shimmering wet lace. Nose is very mild. Plums, ripe dark fruit, chocolate, a little roast, walnut and a soft sweet molasses. Taste is toasted grain, a little chocolate. coffee and plenty of bubbles. Plums are lightly in the background. Alcohol is not on the nose but does creep onto the palate as it warms. Body is thin, creamy and a touch over carbonated. Finishes dry with a light bitter and nutty, burnt toast and a touch of cola.

For once I am not going to say that southern tier has made another overly sweet beer. This beer is subtle and restrained. The dark fruits are mellow and come forward shyly as the beer warms. The chocolate is lost to the roast and toast in the drink. I wouldn’t call it heavy because it has a malt that essentially light but it does have a heaviness to the body that is more from the hop oil and the char and burnt qualities. It drinks smoother as it warms.

Pours mahogany tinged black into a Sam glass. Mocha head with little retention recedes to hug rim. Plum and caramel aromas. Medium bodied with sweet plum and raisin upfront turning to mocha in the sweet lasting dry finish.

Draft… Clear black pour with a glimmer of mahogany and a small, creamy, khaki head. The bouquet is nutty and chocolaty with a splash of Cuban-roast coffee and a mild suggestion of plum. Full-bodied with lively carbonation. The flavor is roasty and well-balanced, offering both bittersweet dark chocolate, espresso and scorched black malts. No plum here. Bittersweet, roasty finish.

Bottle. Black pour with a short tan head. Aroma is dark fruit (plums, obviously, though I wouldn’t have guessed plums had they not been mentioned), roasted malt and light coffee. Taste is dark fruit, hints of tobacco, roasted malt, hints of coffee, burnt caramel and soft earthiness. Body is medium with a light, bubbly carbonation and a mild stickiness. Ends with more dark fruit, lighter tobacco, roasted malt, toasted malt, coffee, earthy notes and caramel.

Bottle that I took to Max’s for Jen’s going away tasting. Pours a clear brown to black with a medium to thick sized brown head. A bit of sweet fruit with a touch of cocoa and roast, chocolate and deep malt. Medium bodied, chocolate, a touch of cocoa. Dusty cocoa into a lightly sweet finish.

Interesting brew. Pours very dark brown with an off white head. The aroma is earthy with a bit of sweetness. A hint of the plum comes through as well. The flavor has some caramel with a bit of the plum. Very thin for a stout. Lots of carbonation too. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone
