Commercial Description:
Porter is our darkest beer, but not necessarily our strongest. It is widely held that the darker the beer the stronger the beer, but this is summarily false. The contribution of color comes directly from the color of malt that we use. Some malt is roasted to achieve dark color and coffee-like flavor, which in turn get transferred to the beer. Our Porter is richly complex with overtones of chocolate and espresso beans followed by a subtle flavor of hops. It’s a nourishing beer without being too sweet or filling.

Oops, this rating is out of order by a few. No big deal. Black, decent head. Aroma of light coffee and a bit of chocolate. Flavor matches, with the pleasant addition of faintly piney and floral hops on the finish. Nice.

12 oz. bottle from Beer Run in Charlottesville. Dark chocolate brown color with a thin but persistent head. Chocolately roasted malt aroma. Taste is roasted malts and coffee with a lactic-type sweetness. A little bit of a thin finish.

Bottle. Pours a deep reddish-black, with a moderate tan head. Strong aroma of coffee and sweet malts. The flavor is similar, with most of the bitterness coming from coffee, rather than hops. Nothing too remarkable, but a fine porter nonetheless.

Smells pleasantly of roasted malts and coffee. Taste is dark coffee malts with a slight metallic taste to it. A very nice porter, not too strong and plenty dark

12oz. A lovely pour of dark brown with a coffee-like head. Aroma is easily the best part, with roasted goodness of coffee, chocolate, nothing too unseen. I can’t say the flavors were inspiring, had good roasted notes but it stopped there and was not balanced with any hops or lighter notes. Mouthfeel was OK, somewhat soft and grainy, made me think I had a mouthful of sawdust. Pretty rough around the edges altogether.

Aroma is very roasted, some nice coffee notes, and some bitter chocolate, even some slight dark fruit notes. Flavour is very roasty, lots of nice malt, and a nice hop bit in the end adding soem nice bitterness. A very well made, and easy drinking porter.

Date: 09/04/08, 12 oz. bottle,

Aroma - Dark roast coffee, some unsweetened chocolate, and a quiet, subtle piney hops

Appearance - Ruby tinged black/brown pour, spare beige head collapses quickly to thin spotty layer, spotty lace

Flavor - Coffee flavors dominate, roasted malts, balanced by a pleasing and gentle hoppy bitterness, and a clean dry finish

Palate - Medium body and carbonation, mildly astringent, and a palate pleasing dryness

Overall - Quality porter with a good nose and balnced flavors.
