I pulled some roasty chocolate and coffee smells with a hint of liquorice. It had a medium sweetness and was actually lightly bitter. It had a heavy body - as is to be expected - creamy, thick feel, soft carbonation and a finish that stuck around. A good porter but it was missing on the total experience of flavors. | 3.4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 3/5 | 6/10 | 3/5 | 15/20 | May 12, 2008 I liked this porter but there wasn’t very pronounced flavors. Poured a dark brown and light brown head. You can taste coffee and chocolate malts with a hint of hops. Needs to be slightly more sweeter. Glouglouburp (2811), Montreal, Quebec, Canada
| 3.1 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 3/5 | 6/10 | 3/5 | 13/20 | May 11, 2008 In short: A light porter. Roasted with some black liquorice. Not offensive but lacking character. One among so man others
How: Tap at Blue Tusk (Syracuse NY)
The look: Black body with a little beige ring of foam.
In long: Light medium body. Roasted malts with no real taste. No chocolate, coffee, of fruity flavours. Just plain roasted malts feeling like liquefied burnt cereals. Ok, maybe a hint of black liquorice but that’s it, nothing else. Very simple. No sweetness which is surprising considering this is a Southern Tier brew. Kind of a surprise (an unpleasant one) to drink such a conventional beer from a brewery that usually goes over the top (sometimes with disastrous results). This beer felt like watching a sweet family-friendly romantic comedy staring Tom Green. Not bad at all but when you rent a Tom Green movie you want a donkey penis and a banana split… in the same shot. StFun (535), Indiana, USA

Not the most complex brew in the world, but not simple either. Roast and malty. A little thin. Armoa leaves a little to be desired, but the flavor is very nice and balanced. Hints of chocolate and barley. Never feels weak, very drinkable. Need to grab this one again. tomthompson89 (1473), Toronto, Ontario, Canada

Southern Tier Porter is a nearly black, dark reddish brown ale with a thick, fluffy beige head that has excellent retention and leaves excellent lacing on the glass. The aroma is fresh and roasty like coffee and chocolate. Smells great! It is medium bodied, very smooth, and the finish is dry. It tastes great! It has an excellent roasty flavor that exhibits great balance. That’s what a porter is supposed to taste like!
(first tasting)
Southern Tier Porter is a dim, dark red ale adorned with an eggy beige head with oily bubbles that stays put and crusts up on the glass. Very handsome. The aroma is muted, grainy, roasty, fresh and dry. It if full bodied and fluffy in the mouth. The finish starts with a sharp bitter snap and then turns silty and dry. The flavor is quite well balanced. It doesn’t lean toward coffee or chocolate; it’s just dark roasted malt here. The end of the taste gets alkaline. The hops kick in to bring me grassiness and set the malt on a spin toward salmiakki. This is an ideal porter. jmikolich (405), Athens, Ohio, USA
