Commercial Description:
Porter is our darkest beer, but not necessarily our strongest. It is widely held that the darker the beer the stronger the beer, but this is summarily false. The contribution of color comes directly from the color of malt that we use. Some malt is roasted to achieve dark color and coffee-like flavor, which in turn get transferred to the beer. Our Porter is richly complex with overtones of chocolate and espresso beans followed by a subtle flavor of hops. It’s a nourishing beer without being too sweet or filling.

1 of 3 bottles in a mixed 12-pack. Dark in colour, rich in flavour, not overly chocolate-y like many porters seem to be. Great espresso flavour. Look forward to the next 2 bottles!

Bottle sampled. Pours black with ruby edges, and a decent size beige head. Aroma of Chocolate, fruit, roast, and hops. The flavor is sweet, chocolate, cherry, roast, citrus, and a fair amount of hops easily detectable.

12oz bottle. Pours a dark, cola color; light tan head with good lacing. Pleasant nougat and lightly roasted malts in the aroma. Medium mouthfeel: roasted malts and milk chocolate, with a hint of burnt / charred character; light citrus presence as well; not exceptionally dense or flavorful, but a decent, drinkable porter. Medium, roasted coffee and burnt malt finish.

Southern Tier Porter 12 oz bottle Moderate pour in a mug. Recent brewing, enjoyed 07/07 Poured black with brown highlights with a large fizzy mostly diminishing head. Smelt of strong coffee, burnt to toasted grain, dark chocolate. Taste was upfront moderate bitter coffee and light to moderate dark chocolate sweetness followed by more of the same, except more accented on the bitterness and dark chocolate aspect on a long finish. Palate was light to medium bodied, lively carbonated, slightly oily and moderately astringent. Overall, a quaint light bodied porter that should satisfy the heavy beer drinker on a hot summer day.

A nice milk chocolate porter. The beer is medium in body with a balancing hoppiness that makes for a very drinkable beer. The palate is rich with coffee and malt. This is a beer that does a good job of being flavorful without being too sweet.

Brown 12 oz bottle with a twist off cap. Twist her off and you get an aroma of dark beer with some licorice mixed in. I also now get some hints of chocolate, a little surprising. Once you pour it into the glass, Nestle Quick chocolate milk mix is the prevalent odor. Very dark color, but not quite as opaque as many dark beer porters or stouts. Cold black coffee greets the tongue on the first sip. There is a mild bitterness on the back of the throat. The kind of bitterness you get when you chew and ingest something burned on the grill. That back of throat burnt sensation. Medium carbonation almost makes this brew enjoyable. Building bitterness, too much for my girlie taste buds. Yuengling black & tan has more manners than this and is less offensive. IMHO Yuengling B & T is much easier to enjoy. This brew is a little more like a Baltic porter. Also not as good as Bell’s or Michelob Porter. However, on par with Saranac Caramel and Arcadia London. Some roasty hop malty bitterness continues on the finish for a few minutes after the last sip.

Rated 5/12/07: Ahh, I like me a good porter and this is one good porter. Huge aroma of chocolate, nuts, and heavy cream. Dark brown pour with a thick khaki head and decent lacing. Mouthfeel is good for this style but I still would like it to be thicker. Very, very drinkable smooth and easy for sure. Flavor is real nice, lots of roasted malts along with some mild smokiness and nutty flavors. Just the right bitterness to compliment the dark malt. Lactic with a creamy flavor, mmm this is a great standard for it’s style.

Bottle. Pours a dark ruby color with a large lasting tan head. Roasty aroma with coffee and bitter chocolate. The mouthfeel is medium bodied and very dry. Flavors include coffee, dark chocolate, and a hint of sweet malt. This is a decent porter; would be better if it weren’t so thin.
