Commercial Description:
Porter is our darkest beer, but not necessarily our strongest. It is widely held that the darker the beer the stronger the beer, but this is summarily false. The contribution of color comes directly from the color of malt that we use. Some malt is roasted to achieve dark color and coffee-like flavor, which in turn get transferred to the beer. Our Porter is richly complex with overtones of chocolate and espresso beans followed by a subtle flavor of hops. It’s a nourishing beer without being too sweet or filling.

Deep brown. Sweet and roasty nose. Smooth and soft texture; somewhat light bodied. Notes of sweet chocolate, toasted bread and a little vanilla. Healthy amount of sweetness was accented by some lactic sourness. A roasty, chocolaty bitterness seemed to round things out pretty well. Overall it was a pretty decent porter, but it was too much like watching a predictable movie.

Head is initially small, frothy, light brown, mostly diminishing. Body is dark brown. Aroma is moderately malty (chocolate, caramel), lightly hoppy (flowers), with a note of vanilla. Flavor is moderately sweet, lightly bitter. Finish is lightly sweet, moderately bitter. Medium body, watery texture, lively carbonation. Pleasant.

Pours darkest brown, near black, smallish tan head, no lace. Perhaps too cold. Aromas of malt, toast, smoke, coffee, and chocolate. Favors were largely roasted malt, coffee, chocolate, raisins, molasses and yeast. Not much hop flavor but considerable hop bitterness in the profile. Long, dry bitter finish. Mouthfeel solid but a bit fizzier than most Porters.

This bottled brew poured a small sized head of foamy light brown colored mostly lasting bubbles that left behind a nearly opaque except around the edge dark ruby red brown colored body. It had a sweet malt dough aroma. The mouth feel was tingly from start to finish with a medium hop aftertaste. The flavor contained thin sweet brown malts with a caramel point to it. It was quite different from most porters I have had. It lacked the complexity and needed more brown malts coffee and roastiness.

Bottle (12oz). Poured very deep brownish black, average light brown head. Aroma - yep, that’s a porter - dry, roasted coffee beans and nuts, olives, prunes, even burnt grappa! Taste is a little too smoky - burnt coffee grounds and sugar, roast chestnuts, charcoal, some fruit. I want to like this a lot, but it’s just too carbonized - mouthfeel is average-bodied and typically still. If you like smoke though ...
