Boliv (188), New York, USA Aug 21, 2009 Bottle. Pours very dark, nearly black, with a thin tan head. Aroma of rich cocoa, caramel, coffee, and roasted malts. Very inviting. Flavor is sweet, roasted malts are present, with espresso notes. Finish is not overly bitter, but well-balanced. I was pretty impressed, I thought it was good. Allen (1285), Switzerland Aug 19, 2009 Bottled 355ml. Comparing with Left Hand Black Jack Porter. Appearance: It pours a slightly hazy, dark ruby beer with a beautiful creamy lacing light beige head. Darker with a taller head. Much better retention too. Aroma: Extremely nice, wonderful, deeply pleasant, inviting and amazing. A lot of raspberry, vanilla, sorbet, wild strawberries, coffee beans, pistachio, chocolate truffes, Christmas cake, coconut and smoke. Absolutely mindblowingly fantastic. Flavor and palate: Subtle carbonation. Medium bodied. Low bitterness. A lot of raspberries showing up again. Surprisingly acidic.
Complex. Faintly smoky. Great malt and hop profile. Wonderful long dry finish which is reminiscent of raspberry and smoke. Overall impression: I reveled in every sip. I can’t imagine a better Porter. The aroma is out of this world! Strongly underrated in my opinion. Maria (6056), Thisted, Denmark Aug 17, 2009 It is black with a red hue and a huge, creamy head. The aroma has notes of roasted malt, chocolate, caramel, light licorice and coffee. The flavour has a light sweetness and notes of roasted malt, chocolate, light caramel, licorice and coffee. The finish has a light bitterness. The body is quit full even if it only holds 5,2%, nice! jredmond (1015), New Jersey, USA Aug 11, 2009 Bottle. Pours a dark dark black brown body. The aroma is sweet roasted malt. The taste is same, still not a fan of porters. topherh (878), Kearney, Missouri, USA Aug 4, 2009 Pours very dark brown with ruby edges and a small beige head. Light roast malt and a good bit of hop in the nose. Flavor is sweet, light coffee, a bit of roast malt, and a bitter finish. Rciesla (3510), Exit 15W, New Jersey, USA Aug 4, 2009 Bottle. A Brown body with ruby hues and a creamy tan head. Chewy chocolate malty mineral calcium, coco notes and a lightly roast y coffee body with a bitter licorice finish. FlssmrBrewAlum (1079), Lisle, Illinois, USA Aug 3, 2009 I have come to the end of the trip that is the Southern Tier 12 oz bottle line.. a mediocre trip it has been, hopefully we can end it on a better note. 12 oz bottle likely from the Binnys Singles Rack (Orland Park, IL). Pours a dark brown with reddish notes around the edges, a translucent body bordering on transparent just dark in some parts. Head is big and light brown, carbonation bubbly that starts to die and eventually settles at a small layer, laces some. Aromas are very light melding some roasty malts and a touch of creamy chocolatey sweetness. A little vague. Initial is thinner bodied than expected, sweeter chocolate and tamer roasted malts make up the initial, a smooth beer with lighter flavors, bit of bitterness and roast come in further into the body, lighter and more sessionable. The body is fairly light overall, finish is mellow sweetness and roast, mixed well, but a bit too watery. Bitterness comes in a bit fuller further in, balances better.. still watery though. This is an ok Porter, I guess. Tastes a little like artificial sweetener in the finish.. still, this base is much better than the raspberry version. jesperhammer (260), Copenhagen, Denmark Aug 1, 2009 31-JUL-2009, Bottle @home.
For a dark porter it is not so dark after all.
