COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Hearty malts meld with a subtle balance of hops to create a dark and nurturing ale of comfort and complexity. Hints of bittersweet chocolate and espresso fill the tongue, finishing with just a touch of smoke. Not too sweet or filling, this versatile dark ale dissuades the notion that a darker beer is a stronger beer. Five varieties of roasted malts are the source of Porter’s dark color and rich taste, while two varieties of hops bring a mellow bite to this deep toasty ale.
FOOD PAIRINGS: Particularly tasty with slow-cooked meats, grilled cheese, smoked sausage. Pairs well with chocolate desserts, pumpkin pie, cheesecake.
AVAILABILITY: Year-round / 12oz (6pk and 24 bottle cases) / 1/2 keg, 1/6 keg

Kind of a one note beer, mostly espresso like burnt flavor. Not as sweet as I would have expected. Bitter burnt flavors with very little hop. Kind of thin mouth feel. Enjoyable but not anything memorable.

Pours dark mahogany (reddish tint in the light), with an off white head. Aroma is slightly sweet with roasted malt. This is a medium bodied beer with a nice dark chocolate taste and a heavy coffee aftertaste. This was a surprising beer...very we’ll done.

Reviewed from notes. American Porter deserves to be poured into a pint glass. The appearance was a dark brown close to black color with a nice settling one finger white foamy head that left a light somewhat clingy lacing after the head dissipated within about a minute. The smell had a hearty dark roasted sweet maltiness that let in a light earthy bitterness. Light chocolate ends up coming in near the end. The taste was semi-sweet with the dark roasty sweet maltiness fulfilling my taste buds. On the palate, this one sat about a medium on the body with a slight sessionability to it. The carbonation seemed to be good for the style as it was just sharp enough but also still slightly smooth enough. Overall, I say this was a good American Porter to have again.

Poured from bottle into a pint glass Appearance – The beer pours a deep brown color with a huge billowy brown tinted head. The head has a great level of retention, slowly fading to leave a moderate level of foamy lace on the sides of the glass. Smell – The aroma of the beer is heaviest of a roasted malt smell with a rather strong showing of a caramel and toffee sweetness. Some other darker aromas of a light cocoa and a bit of cola are there along with some light dark fruit aromas of raisin. Some light coffee and a little bit of smoke round out the smell and while overall the aroma is somewhat complex, the aromas don’t really necessarily meld all that well together. Taste – The taste begins thinner and somewhat more dry with a roasted malt flavor with some hints of caramel and toffee upfront. While it starts out weaker, the roasted flavors get stronger and stronger as the taste advances along with the caramel and toffee getting stronger as well. While the roasted and sweet get stronger a bitter coffee flavor begins working its way onto the tongue with some other flavors of a cocoa nature coming as well. The coffee remains rather light until the very end where it is met with some mild hoppy aromas of an earthy and herbal nature, which seem to accentuate the strength and bitterness of the coffee. With the slightly bitter nature of the coffee and hop and with the caramel dwindling a bit and a light bit of raisin coming to the tongue, one is left with a somewhat drier (for a porter) and slightly bitter but quite enjoyable roasted flavor to linger on the tongue. Mouthfeel – The body of the beer is very thin for a porter with a carbonation level that is rather average for a porter. The moderateness of the carbonation is rather nice for the roasted, sweet, and bitter coffee flavors, but with that said a thicker body would have created a much nicer medium and mouthfeel for this brew overall. Overall – The look and taste of the brew are really fantastic. If it wasn’t for the lackluster smell and feel this could easily be a top class year round porter. Overall it is well worth a try though if you get a chance.

Bottle. Dark cola. Mainly dark chocolate on the nose with roasty espresso notes. The taste follows suit and adds a hint of smoked malt with a nice sweet finish (maybe a citrus hop note creating that). Low carb, and super light on the palate. Very easy to drink but, full flavored. Great stuff. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone
