COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Porter is our darkest beer, but not necessarily our strongest. It is widely held that the darker the beer the stronger the beer, but this is summarily false. The contribution of color comes directly from the color of malt that we use. Some malt is roasted to achieve dark color and coffee-like flavor, which in turn get transferred to the beer. Our Porter is richly complex with overtones of chocolate and espresso beans followed by a subtle flavor of hops. It’s a nourishing beer without being too sweet or filling.

bottle from ingles sylva. 7/12/11. dark porter color with a clingy beige head. big chocolate nose... lesser notes of roast, charcoal, malt powder, citrus and grass. the flavor is the same... there’s an orange dark chocolate truffle thing going on in there which i’m really digging. it finishes with some charcoal dryness which lingers into the aftertaste along with more malt. it’s on the full side of medium and very nice. 8/4/8/4/16+

Undated 12 ounce brown glass bottle of "DARK ROBUST PORTER" served in a snifter. Appearance: Very dark and reddish mahogany body that looks nearly black but is clear and has exceptional ruby-mahogany edges. Creamy tan colored head soon reduces to a ring but leaves some decent lacing on the glass. Nose: Medium and dark roasted malts with light spicy hops and hints of coffee and roasted nuts. Aroma strengthens and improves with warming. Taste: Hops contribute a nice bit of spiciness and lead to an excellent sweet/bitter balance, but the flavor is clearly dominated by roasted malts. Mostly a dark roast and there’s a touch of smoke in the finish, but no unwanted burnt flavors. Coffee, roasted nuts and dark malt in the lingering aftertaste.. Mouthfeel: Nice smooth medium+ body with near perfect carbonation. O: a relatively gentle, subtle and refined American porter with admirable balance and complexity. Not as rich or strong as a typical Robust Porter.

Cola brown with a thin quick clearing head, quite high carbonation. The initial aroma is some roast and chocolate, the flavour is pretty much the same. The body is thin. Fairly one dimensional and not as id hoped.

The aroma is reminiscent of roasted malts, earth, and vanilla, which is pleasing to the nose, and the appearance of this beer fuses a very dark brown color with a small tan head that fades quickly yet leaves a persistent ring. The taste is slightly sweet, slightly sour, and a touch bitter, which doesn’t really meet the expectations I had for this porter (due to the 5 types of malts advertised on the bottle), but the palate is great as a result of the medium body, slick texture, soft carbonation, and an abrupt finish.
