thedm (3833), Fort Wayne, Indiana, USA Jun 25, 2008 This bottled brew from JSquire at a rating party poured a small sized head of foamy mostly diminishing bubbles that left behind a softly carbonated transparent light brown colored body and a fair lacing. The aroma was very odd with raspberry and malt notes. The mouth feel was tingly from start to finish. The flavor contained notes of raspberry and malt. Ugh pass on this one. ChainGangGuy (2523), Kennesaw, Georgia, USA Jun 14, 2008 Appearance: Pours a clear, dark reddish-brown body with a small, bubbly, white head.
Smell: Strong raspberry aroma with background smelling vaguely of chocolate and dark malts.
Taste: Dark maltiness with a hint of baker’s chocolate and a rather restrained sweetness. The raspberries are really downplayed for the taste when compared to the aroma, which, depending on your liking towards raspberries, can either be a good or bad thing. Slight pinch of bitterness near the drying finish.
Mouthfeel: Medium-bodied. Medium carbonation.
Drinkability: When looking at the separate components, you see a middling fruit beer and a pretty dull porter. Leaning on one another they present a decent beer, but that’s about it. Alright, now sign me up for a Raspberry Wheat. decaturstevo (1971), decatur, Tennessee, USA Jun 10, 2008 Huge raspberry aroma that just overpowers your senses. A brown pour with light tan head. All the raspberry are used on the nose not much raspberry flavor. A light fruit after taste. Thin but carbonation is good. A beer that promises alot but doesn’t deliver on the flavor like it does on the nose. Bad? No, just not what the nose led me to believe it would be. BlackForestCO (819), Fort Collins, Colorado, USA Jun 8, 2008 Bottle thanks to dmac. Poured a cola-brown color with a moderate white head that faded to a ring. Aroma is dominated by raspberry, but there is some light chocolate in the background. Flavor consists of sweet, lightly tart raspberry with some light chocolate and moderate chalky bitterness on the finish. Moderate dryness, but somewhat thin on the palate. Thanks Dave. Slipstream (734), USA Jun 7, 2008 Floral raspberry dessert aroma. Dark brown pour without much head. Taste is dry and fruity with touches of coffee and pipe tobacco. The berries are present, but do not dominate. More like a fruity ale than a porter. Reasonably well-hopped and drinkable. rampmaster (315), Alden, New York, USA Jun 7, 2008 Presentation: Poured from a 12oz bottle into a pint glass. It has a deep brown amber color with deep reddish highlights and a big light tan head that fades to a thin cap on top. Very little to no lacing is left on the glass as it slides down the sides of the glass. The aroma has a sweet berry scent. There is a strong raspberry aroma along with loganberry and other wild berries. Also there is a light roasted malty note under the berry aromas and an even lighter hint of hops in the background. Its flavor has a big shot of raspberry syrup over a milk chocolaty cake dough malt base. The raspberry sweetness slides to the finish on a slick palate, where it is met by light leafy/herbal hops. The finish has a light bitterness from the hops and a slight tartness from the raspberry. The body is medium to full with soft carbonation. This is defiantly on the sweet side and unbalanced for a porter. It is quite drinkable and I like it but it seems to be more of a fruit beer than a porter.
Boutip (2334), Gatineau, Quebec, Canada Jun 2, 2008 Bottle: Poured a deep clear brown color ale with an average foamy head with average retention and no lacing. Aroma consists of real lightly sweet raspberry with some light roasted malt notes. Taste is a nice mix between some lightly bitter roasted malt notes with some black chocolate and some real raspberry taste. I am usually not the biggest fan of sweet fruity porter but I thought this was a real treat. Shag (1922), Chattanooga, Tennessee, USA May 27, 2008 A dark brown appearance with a minimal head. The aroma contains some chocolate but loads of raspberries. The flavor contains some chocolate, coffee, and raspberries which again dominate. The palate was a bit thin on this one. Overall I thought it was pretty good.
