Ritterkreuz (179), Seneca Falls, New York, USA Feb 13, 2008 Well, raspberry’s a good word, but porter? Hardly. I found this to be very watery with no real bear taste to it all. Really, it just reminded me of flavored carbonated water. joshsmith (5), Fall River, Massachusetts, USA does not count Feb 11, 2008 bottle from Cardoza’s in Fall River. dark, reddish-brown with nice lace and retention. fruitty aroma with unmistakable notes of chocolate. first tart, then tangy, and finally sour flavor. supposedly this is made with real raspberries but the taste is syrupy and artificial. light bodied with lively mouthfeel... too thin for a porter in my mind. DirtyMartini (194), Los Angeles, Alabama, USA Feb 2, 2008 nice looking beer....though on the lighter side. more like a english brown porter with a big fluffy white head. unfortunately, whether it was made with real raspberries or not...it tasted like a thin porter with an overwhelming fake raspberry flavor. not bad to drink, just nothing i would seek out again. Brigadier (1220), Chagrin Falls, Ohio, USA Feb 2, 2008 12 oz bottle
This has been sitting around for a while now. After three bottles it was time to sit down and capture the experience. It’s not your typical porter thanks to the raspberry aspects. On the other hand the raspberry is not as intense as in other fruity beers. It strikes a nice balance between them. My advice is to try it fresh; this is not a beer to age.
Aroma / Appearance - Tart raspberries stand out in stark contrast to the porter underneath. It smells almost like a jar of Smuckers jam has just been opened and put on toasted white bread. The deep purple body captures the aromas as well. Even before taking a sniff it was possible to tell that this had fruity characteristics.
Flavor / Palate - Malt, wheat and raspberries form the liquid sensation of a peanut butter and jelly sandwich. The mouthfeel is a little thin; I wish this was a bit more porterly. Overall however it is an interesting hybrid is that a litte less than the sum of its parts. jstraw (750), Chicago, Illinois, USA Jan 28, 2008 Red amber with fair, creamy tan head / Bright, fresh raspberry nose / Light, fizzy body with little finish / Simple flavors of raspberries with toffee notes. blipp (1631), Newark, New Jersey, USA Jan 25, 2008 Bottle. Pours dark brown with a beige head. Very fruity nose with notes of chocolate, berry, and caramel. Medium/full body. Tastes very similar to smell with just enough hops present to round it out and make the raspberry really pop out. Finished dry and sweet. A very good dessert beer. BBB63 (4199), La Porte, Indiana, USA Jan 24, 2008 Bottle and served in my Ommegang tulip: Deep brown with reddish highlights topped by a nice frothy head and good lace. The aroma has notes of syrupy raspberry, chocolate and nutty malts, a hint of smoke and grassy vapours. The taste starts with a combination of fruity twang and malt sweetness. Perhaps too much actually for it seems to not mesh very well IMO. There is a saving grace of charred bitterness and some herbal hops. The mouth feel is lively yet somehow was soft in the end with a metallic finish. I liked some aspects of this brew but wish it had tasted cleaner and more tart, I have had worse and it is far better than the Raspberry Wheat. Funknmilla (577), Phoenixville, Pennsylvania, USA Jan 24, 2008 12 oz bottle...smells like malty raspberries....a malt ball with a raspberry in the center....looks like a pepsi with a beige head...thin body---watery raspberry flavor, not very impressive...a weird sour bitter finish...not enjoyable....raspberries turned for the worse...the only thing this beer has going is the simple aroma, which even that ive smelled better
