Commercial Description:
Don't let Tripel's light color and delicate aroma fool you, this is one serious beer brewed with maximum effort. First, we introduce freshest barley to crystal filtered water. Second, we add the best hops shipped directly for Europe. Third, our special yeast is the catalyst for fermentation, gobbling sugar and creating alcohol as it works. Some say that the Belgian monks who first brewed this style called it triple to denoted its high alcohol content. Still others believe triple's origins lay in its triple fermentation; twice in the brewery and once in the bottle. Whatever the answer, ours is the Tripel threat.

Very crystal clear gold body - what’s the deal here, I’m expectng something cloudy, bottle conditioned, less filtered. Oh well, we drink it anyway. Aroma is floral, herbal and sweet, light hops. Taste is thin and carbonated, malts are very light and candy sweet. Some honey and summer fruit (melons). Eh, this wasn’t all that engaging.

Meh, quite disappointing as a labelled "tripel." Tasted like an American Wheaty Pilsner on steroids when all was said and done. The pour was weak from the get go, hazy amber colored pour, weak initial head, especially horrid within style, no retention of even what was there, lacing miserable. The aroma was weak, caramel, grass, herbal notes. The flavor was grassy, herbal, slightly vegetal hops, caramel in the base, earthy wheaty type notes, some floral notes, some spiciness, nothing identifiable from a spice rack per se, maybe the spicing came from the hops. Mouthfeel was hoppy zippy with a bitter finish, fairly thin for the style. Lacked yeasty elements that need to be there. Sorry, I’m normally ok w/ ST, but this is a poor attempt at the style, honestly.

Southern Tier Tripel 12 oz bottle, Jungle Jim’s. 4/17/2007 Clear golden yellow color Frothy near white crown, scant lacing Aroma: Sweet, mildly fruity (apples, pears) and spicy, hint of alcohol Flavor: Yeasty/doughy malt and a little bit of bitterness. Alcohol in flavor and finish. Medium-light body, smooth. Very little carbonation. Good, but average Tripel - not overly complex or interesting.

0.65 l bottle at Pikkulintu, Helsinki. Orange color with small head. Sweetish, resiny, fruity, herbal and resiny aroma with tropical fruits, peach and orange. Fruity, resinuous, herbal and orangey flavor with hint of solvent. This one had very weird resinous aroma and flavor which I didn’t like.

Hazed peachy golden hue, slim disappearing head. Ripe fruit in the nose, zesty citrus sly spices, but overall, rather quiet. And mild on the palate, too. Citric bite is bigger, though, juicier, tart, too. ...but, oddly flat. Falls like a thud and doesn’t really please the tongue all that much. A bit tingly, but not enough. Medium bodied, light, tartnness-n-spice finish. Needs a lot more personality. Drinks okay, for 9 %, but possesses little in the way of pizzaz, or even panache.

I rather enjoyed this. Medium gold, slight haze, good lasting head. Aroma was fruity, oranges with a bit of a floral note. Flavor was lightly of gummy pale malts, with a nice citric finish, with a hint of spice and floral notes. Balanced, not cloyingly sweet. One of the better tripels I’ve had in a while. You could accuse it of being a pimped out wit minus the wheat, but this was a nice beer. Surprised by the low ratings here.

Bottle. Banana yeasts in the nose with a bit of spicy pepperiness to go along with it. Fairly authentic. Honey may also be in there. Mildly hazy yellowish-copper color with a very small and disappointing white head. Head needs to be larger and beer need to be hazier for a tripel. Sweet to start, staying mostly sweet with a mild bitterness to finish. Sweet, bananas, honey, and grainy. Almost like honey-nut cheerios in a way. This is a nice attempt that hides the alchol well, but it’s just sort of bland and boring.
