3.3 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 13/20
Slight sweet aroma, with just a touch of banana and bubblegum. Pours a deep amber in color, with a much smaller head then exxpected which quickly fades to a tight cap. Lively carbonation is visible, but no sediment can be seen. The taste seems to have something off about it for the style. If I had to make a guess, I’d say it’s the citrus hops which seem to be out of place. It starts with a slight candylike taste, which goes to citrus, and then has a moderate bitter finish. Not a bad beer, but not what I was expecting from a Tripel.

3.3 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 13/20
Bottle. Poured a clear medium orange color with a white head. Smelled predominantly of caramel and light citrus. Medium bodied and slightly sweet. Caramel and nondescript fruit flavors. So so.

3.2 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 12/20
Bottle. 22 oz. Pours a deep fuzzy Big Bird yellow with a fizzy white fluff head. Aroma of marshmallow, grapes, sour lemon zest, funk, bitter hops, Southern Tier malt, and Belgian candied sugars. Medium bodied with a full, thick, nearly overwhelmingly sticky mouthfeel. Solidly warm finish. Great tripel, though not in line with the traditional flavor profile of a genuine Belgian tripel. This one is distinclty American; big, bold, and boozy

2.3 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 4/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 9/20
From notes. Originally reviewed 12/17/2008.
Poured from a 22 oz bottle into a goblet.
Southern Tier’s Tripel pours a golden, copper color with a small head, most of which dissipates, leaving a small amount of lacing. There is some cloudiness from the yeast that settles toward the bottom.
There is an appealing aroma of light caramel malt, some crisp fruit and a fair amount of bready notes. As it warms, a heavy alcohol smell is more apparent.
I get a sense of a very light caramel malt at the beginning of the sip, but this is overwhelmed quickly by the strong alcohol taste, which is neither subtle nor appealing. Strong biscuity taste throughout. The somewhat citrusy hops finish out the end of the beer. Unfortunately, the hops clearly overpower the weak malt. There is a complete lack of transition and balance between the tastes, which is surprising considering it is a tripel.
There is a very coarse feel to this beer. The yeast adds a very bready feel.
With the noticeably strong alcohol content and lack of smoothness, this is not a beer I particularly enjoyed, nor did I find it very drinkable.
The bottle recommends serving at 42 degrees; a cold temperature may be necessary given the lack of smoothness and high alcohol content. I did not think this was a terrible beer, but there is no comparison between this and some of the great tripels out there.

2.8 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 12/20
22oz bottle from notes. Really disappointing tripel here. Pours out a decent golden color, but seems to be lacking depth, which is a common theme. Aromas are light, that yeasty sweeter edge I want isn’t there. Palate follows with a little more disapointment, thin with a strange acidic finish. Jumbled palate makes me think this is just some soft of belgian pale strong that went wrong.

Bottled. A hazy dark gold coloured beer with a small white head. A spicy yeasty aroma with reasonable hop levels. Good perfumed floral spicy flavours with Belgian yeasty notes. A decent tripel with a definite US twist.
