3.8 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 16/20 bman1986 (173) - Broadstairs, Kent, - AUG 7, 2010Draft at The New Sydney, Hobart. A strong, dark and very rich stout. Big chocolate and roasted malt flavours with a really nice tang to it. Fair coffee hit thrown in there to boot, quite viscous with a terrific mouthfeel. All in all a fantastic stout.

Bottle in Adelaide. Very coffee forward stout with a fair bit of a metallic note. Ok quaffed and fairly similar to coopers stout. Ok

A-- Poured reddish black and settled black with just a few tints of red when put near light. Quick fading mocha colored head with just a bit of head retention. No visible carbonation.
S-- Coffee, roasted malts and barley with faint hints of lemon. Not a big nose at all.
T-- A slightly bitter coffee taste in the front of my mouth. Pretty rich but a smooth taste.
M-- More it sat in my mouth the more the lemon came out and it cut down the bitterness. Finished very lemony. Lower medium carbonated and fuller bodied.
D-- Easy to drink and nice beer

375mL bottle
Been a long time since i’ve had one of these - use to bring a couple of longnecks with me to parties back in the day.
Pours a red highlighted jet black body, deep tan head is dense and paints lace in its wake.
Nice rich nose dominated by bitter chocolate, rich caramel, medium roast coffee with undertones of raisin and earthy spice.
Carbonation reasonably low, texture is smooth, almost oily. Body perhaps not as thick as first expected, certainly very full and luscious but not in Imperial territory. Carries the substantial abv well.
Big hit of cocoa upfront on the body, supported by sweet toffee and roast nuts, more roasted characters of coffee grinds and charcoal, leading onto a complex fruity characteristic reminiscent of bitter orange peel and dried Cabernet Sauvignon grapes (yeah, bit out of the blue there...). Bitter finish, dries out a fair bit with a lingering minerally, earthy spice (hop derived? POR?). Alcohol sneaks through almost undetected.
Pretty much the bench mark for all Australian Foreign Stouts to be judged upon. Plenty of lovely roast malt character, excellent balance, big enough to carry the flavour well without being overwelmingly huge and over the top.

UPDATED: JUL 28, 2012 I’d never had this beer before but since it appeared in the book 1001 Beers to try Before You Die then I thought why haven’t I tried it! Colour is a nice black with a good creamy tan head. Aroma has some coffee and light caramel with a bit of roast there too. Like a lot of Australian and tropical stouts there is also a fruity character to the aroma and on the palate. Mouthfeel is quite rich and slightly slick. A good stout that I would drink again.
4.3 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 18/20 thewolf (9992) - Kolding, DENMARK - JAN 17, 2011
Bottle @ Oz’n’NZ tasting 2011. [thanks bluebetty]
Dark brown, bordering on black. Small, creamy, light-beige head. Aroma has roasted malts, liqourice, light astringency. Light to medium carbonation, great dry and creamy palate. Flavour is fantasticly balanced. Dry, bitter, roasted, peat, light smoky, liqourice, grassy. Mildly vinious. Absolutely fabulous.

Bottle. Pours jet black with a decent rocky tan coloured head. Plenty of lacing as it falls away. Aromas are not huge and a little sweet and sour. Am getting some roasted malt, milt chocolate and a slight sourness. But like I said nothing huge. Plenty of dark fruit in the flavours, dark chocolate and raosted malt. Some sourness on the end. Medium mouthfeel and low carbonation. Pretty decent beer.

Tap. Exceptional. Aromas of apple, vanilla, coffee, chocolate, caramel, and spices. Taste has a sweet start, with long lasting bitterness. Palate is velvety, with a medium-to-full body. Black, with a frothy off-white head.

A lovely stout. Not overly powered in any department. A nice splendid assortment of dark chocolate, coffee, toffy, caramalisation. Very sessionable.

375ml bottle. Pours thick and black, like pouring motor oil in your engine. Thick creamy tan head caps off a solid body. Warming roast malt and burnt toffee flavours that hide the high alcohol content well. A good beer from a large brewery.
