Deep copper/light brown, clear, off-white dissipating head. Aroma is light overall, with bready malt and some toast. Flavor features bready, toasty Munich malt with a little toffee sweetness, clean lager character. Well made, easy-drinking.

3.2 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 2/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20
12 oz. bottle served in shaker- I haven’t had this before... really? Damn, ok... poured a transparent darkened brown with tints of mahogany when held to a light source, low carbonation, razor thin white ring around the glass for a head, no lacing. Aroma of burnt caramel, wheat bread, and good times- it’ll work. Hits the mouth with a high-light body, malt doesn’t have as much as sweetness as the aroma lets off, middle has those same sensations continue, finish has just a light touch of hop acidity. Pretty good if I don’t say so myself.

2.2 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 2/5 TASTE 4/10 PALATE 1/5 OVERALL 8/20
UPDATED: APR 25, 2013 Appearance is medium brown, almost no head, and clear. The aroma is complete malt, and not bad, though I wish my bottles were fresher. Astringent in the mouth, with lots of fizziness. After one and a half of these, the sticky bitter aftertaste is not pleasant.
Edit: Day 2 of this six pack. I’m noticing a sweet hops aroma that I missed yesterday, along with some caramel flavor. Not bad but overall impression is still below average.

Bottle. Roasty malt and burnt caramel with a solid dose of nutmeg. Not my favorite but very drinkable. And what the fuck is a tmavy?

2.8 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 12/20
Pours a mahogany color with decent tan head and little lacing. Aroma of toasted malt with a hint of nuttiness and grain. Detect a hint of wet cardboard also. Taste is of bready toasted malt with some caramel and a bit of herbs. Cardboard also detectable in taste. Medium body with semi thin mouthfeel and moderate carbonation. Beer was somewhat oxidized so need to try again.

12 oz bottle. Pours a cola color with a thin fizzy head. Aroma of bread, caramel, and raspberries. Taste like caramel, bread, and dark fruits. Thin with subtle carbonation. A slight bitterness in the finish. Not awful but not great either.

3.2 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 12/20
From a bottle poured at the correct serving temperature.
Light malt aroma. Little bread/toffee aroma as expected on more flavorful examples of the style. Medium to low caramel aroma. No hop aroma, which is to style.
Medium tan head that pours thick and disappears quickly.
Very Clean reddish brown color, filtered obviously.
Bubble were large, making is look not creamy.
Moderately sweet with caramel notes as it warms in the mouth.
Hop bitterness is present and balancing, but not lingering.
Not much of the complex melanoidin (toffee, bread crust) flavors expected in a Dunkel. Definitely no chocolate, but that is optional.
Medium-light boy. Medium-high carbonation lifts the weight. Crispy finish, very easy drinking.
A descent beer. Not quite what I expect of a flavorful dunkel, but serves well on an example that you’d want to drink several bottles. I am sure it is a whole different story at the source, on tap.

The Spaten Dunkel (dark wheat) offers a great alternative to Wit/Wheat beer drinkers. This Dunkel is easy to drink as it’s light on the palate and offers a nice wit beer flavor with a bit a malt added.
