drewbeerme (2223), Chicago, Illinois, USA Oct 23, 2008 12oz bottle, ’08 vintage. pours clear copper with small off white head. earthy, doughy, and toffee malt aroma. a bit toasted, caramel, and earth. light to med mouth feel. not too shabby. rampmaster (316), Alden, New York, USA Oct 23, 2008 Presentation: It was poured from a green 12oz bottle into a dimpled mug.
Appearance: It had a dark brunt orange amber color which is very different from the light golden Spaten Oktoberfest that I remember enjoying a few years ago. The body had good clarity and the head was thin and faded fast leaving very little head or lace.
Smell: The aroma was light and had floral hops with a slight skunk popping out though sweet caramel and candy like malt notes. (My wife noted that is was like smartees candy.)
Taste/Mouth feel: It had a sweet candy like malt flavor with some mild floral hops. Hop bitterness was very light and coved up buy the sweetness of the malt. It finishes on the sweet side with hint of grassy hops. It was about medium bodied with a smooth texture and light carbonation.
Notes: Overall it was not bad but nothing like the lighter Spaten Oktoberfest that I remember which was very good.
Floback (333), Naples, Florida, USA Oct 23, 2008 Bottle from Total Wine. Pours a couple-centimeter off-white head and a standard amber color. Aroma of hops and a surprisingly funky odor of skunk. This tastes just like the smell: skunky hops, toast, grains, and biscuit. Medium carbonation and thin/medium body. A decent marzen, but very one-dimensional and boring in flavor and body. ericandersnavy (1039), crossroads, Texas, USA Oct 20, 2008 on tap at metzlers in denton tx. poured a amber/orange with an off-white head. going off memory(which is not very good). aroma of malt with a little bit of earthy spices. flavor is right on with most oktoberfests. this did have a nice hop bitter to bring out the finish. a decent o-fest, but not my favorite. WickerBrew (312), Chicago, Illinois, USA Oct 20, 2008 This was really good for a nasic Octoberfest. Maybe one of the best I have had. It was alot darker then most of the others out there and very very drinkable. Perfect on its own but i would have liked to have had some food with it. halfonit (423), Fall River, Massachusetts, USA Oct 17, 2008 Has a medium golden color to it. Strong malt scent with hardly any hints of hops. Has kind of a metallic scent as well. Good malt flavor. Has a little bite in the end, but this is overall a pretty smooth brew. Happy to have tried it, but I probably won’t get this one again. FatguyRacer (129), Crownsville, Maryland, USA Oct 16, 2008 Draft from keg at a party. I brought my own 1 liter stein to this party just for this beer, which I knew would be present ahead of time. I was not dissapointed. The head was big and beautiful as was the dark amber color. The taste was bold from a great balance of hops and malts that left a great aftertaste. A great fest beer. cloudstrife (50), Rochester, New York, USA Oct 16, 2008 12oz Bottle poured into glass. Thin head on top of a deep golden-brownish body. Strong malty presence in the aroma with a hint of oranges. The smell reminds me of Franciskanner. Taste is similar to what you would expect with the smell; strong malt presence with an aftertaste of caramel. LIght carbonation on the palate with an oily feel. Not the most impressive entry from Spaten, but not the runt of the litter either.
