3.1 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 14/20
January 2nd, 2013 - Beers like the Oktoberfest Ur-Märzen make me want to brush up on my beer studies and BJCP progress, on account of having no clue what makes a Marzen Ur, or how that’s distinguished from an Un-Ur-Marzen. Or a Non-Ur? Whatever the difference, this does remind of all the malty, caramel goodness of an Oktoberfest, and the festival itself. Lots of nuts in the aroma, including honeyed peanuts, some burnt honey or burnt toffee, and a little sweetness that reminds me of Sprite - curious. Carbonation assaults the tongue at the tip of the sip, which suddenly wives way to honey and that strange Sprite flavor again. The body is thin, and given the flavors, this might go well with greasy or acidic foods, but by itself it’s a little thin, and clear, and sessionable too. And that might be the point, given the timing of this brew’s annual and celebratory release.

Well balanced albeit a little low on flavors. Gentle sweetness from roasted malts and a lightly bitter finish.

1.6 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 1/10 PALATE 1/5 OVERALL 2/20
Pours a beautiful color and smells great; all I can taste is caramel and spice overtones, and some other (unable to describe) aspect that just made this malt liquor mostly undrinkable. Maybe I got a bad bottle at the grocery store, but if not I can’t see myself drinking this again.

2.9 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 12/20
Draft. From notes. On the sweet side. Bready and caramel malt dominate. Probably my least favorite style here. Meh, drinkable.

3.2 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20
Bottle, pours amber with a white head, light sweet taste with caramel, malt, and some spice, light hop finish, decent but I think Optimator is better.
