2 AROMA 3/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 3/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 9/20 BlackHaddock (1697) - Shropshire, ENGLAND - APR 26, 2012
Nov 2009: Brown half litre bottle, best before Oct 2010, so a 2009 brew!
Very pale for a Marzen, very pale indeed, looks like a normal lager/helles/pilsner, golden with a pure white head. This is my second O’Fest beer of the little O’Fest I’m having tonight.
Almost odourless, gets my standard score of 3 for a non-smelling lager/pilsner.
Tastes like a pilsner which has had sugar added to make it stronger in its ABV. No great flavours or points to pontificate about, un-impressed.
I’ve been to Munich many times, including 8 O’Fests, this bottled beer bears no resemblance to the draught Marzens I’ve had from Spaten over the years. Reminded me of sugared water.
3.3 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 2/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 15/20 redpooba (167) - New York, USA - FEB 29, 2012
This beer is the genre definer, the one which all other October feast beers are judged against. It’s light and crisp in body and head. Imperial hops make it bright and lofty just like the fall colors.
3.4 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20 ALLOVATE (1700) - Butler, WA, AUSTRALIA - FEB 6, 2012
Bottle @ Spatenhaus an der oper, Munich, Germany. Bright sunny gold with sparse, intermittent carbonation. Two fingered rocky white crown that is lasting and leaves lot of mess upon the glass in its wake. Strong malt aroma: dusty, biscuity with hints of fresh baked warm white bread and fresh cracked grains with a lightly peppery edge. Quite sweet in the mouth, generously malty with a big Munich malt presence. Peppery in back, lots of toasted grains with just a touch of tangy sourness prior to a subtley hoppy swallow that had residual sweetness to it. Body is quite light, but it is creamy in mouthfeel and crisp in tail, very clean and straightforward. Gets heavy as it warms, so down it goes whilst chilled. Not bad, but not the most sessionable Märzen.

2.6 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 11/20 JaKeAFC (200) - ITALY - JAN 27, 2012
50cl bottle, 0.75€, 5.9%. Pale golden with a big white head, fair lacing. Sharp wet malts and spices. Balanced bitter-sweet taste, lasting bitterness. Oily texture, sticky lips. Medium bodied, dense, lively carbonation. Nothing more to say, expected something better, looks like a powered lager. Other Oktoberfest marzen are a lot smoother. Perfect to get a quick booze inexpensively, otherwise average.
