On tap at Hessen Haus in Des Moines. The beer is particularly a staple at this joint and I used to drank it more than I do now. It does drank pretty good. Pours a deep brownish black. Plenty of molasses and sweet roasted malt in the aroma. Flavor is very sweet in a decidedly good way notes of licorice, sweet malt and coffee. Terribly enjoyable.

Slight tan head over chestnut brown body. Nose was slight orange peel and grapefruit, some malt sweetness. Taste was of raisins with a very soft malt beginning, followed by a building roast quality, and then a bitter hop finish. Very soft and well balanced. Medium fill, soft fizzy palate.

Poured from a 500ml bottle. Wonderful sweet, caramel aroma. Tan head dissipated pretty rapidly. Amazingly smooth and complex mouth feel and taste. Vanilla finish is accented with food. I can’t find anything wrong about this beer.

Pours dark brown with a small head. Aromas of toasted malts and big time caramel. Taste was, again, hard on the caramel with some nice malts and a little alcohol coming through. Nothing spectacular coming through, but extremely solid nonetheless.

Bottle. Pours a deep dark mahoagony with a small light tan head that leaves decent lacing. The nose is dark fruits and caramel malts. Taste is prunes, molasses, caramel and burnt brown sugar with light hops in the finish. Medium, semi-creamy mouth feel. A touch sweet for me but this is a well put together beer.

Big bubbles, a head that disappears quickly. Taste is slightly complex malts, caramel, toast...but I thought it would be better.
