3.4 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20 Pershing (273) - Garland, Texas, USA - SEP 1, 2008
Rich and malty with an overpowering sweetness after the first sip. The roasted malt stands out with a nice hop balance. Ends with a smooth filling finish.

UPDATED: SEP 6, 2008 Bottle. Pours dark and heavy like German tank oil. Generous lingering tan head and lacing. Right from the pour this looks serious and inviting. Aroma has caramel, chocolate, and malt. Feels properly full and heavy on the palate like a doppelbock should. Carbonation is light and pleasant. Flavor starts with some caramel and toffee sweetness which usher in rich roasted malt and chocolate. Light hops lead to some good bitterness on the finish and only a hint of alcohol that belies its higher A.B.V. Well -balanced and complex. This is a very satisfying beer, and the best quality for the money (and availability) that I’ve encountered. A mainstay for sure.

well I had small glass of this today and then just realized I had never rated this. I have had it many times and I have always liked this one. Brown pour wtih a fair sized beige head. Aroma is malty and sugary. Flavor is caramel, toffee, malts, dried fruit and some yeast. well done.

Poured medium light brown with a slowly dissipating tan head. Aroma of toffee, grain, and slightly roasty. Most of the aromas come though over to the flavor with an added oats and a slightly noticable alcoholic finish. Bitter finish. Not bad for a new beer at Tops. Overall a pretty decent Doppelbocker.

On tap at the flying saucer in KC.
Pours a thinner looking brown with a off-white head. Hint of alcohol smell with notes of berry candy and light hops. Tastes of sweet caramel malts, toffee, a little bit of roast, and berries. Pretty dry and breadlike with a lighter body. Ends with a tiny hint of bitterness. Overall, a solid doppelbock, but just not up to Ayinger Celebrator quality. I would get it again though.
3.8 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 15/20 holdenn (1841) - Chicago, Illinois, USA - AUG 16, 2008
On tap at Resi’s Bierstube. I was happy to see this on and so I had to get a couple of these. Pours a dark black/brown with a beige head that lasts through most of the glass. Straight forward roasted malts and a touch of sweetness in the aroma. The molasses and roasted flavors are strong in the flavor with an edge of charred burnt malts. As this gets too warm the malts start tasting somewhat cola like and a little sweet. But this is otherwise a solid doppelbock that’s so drinkable and I’ll grab whenever I see it.
