Appearance: very dark ruby-brown, slightly translucent, thin head. Aroma: fresh-baked chocolate muffins, with hints of leather, wood, and raisins. Taste: rich and sweet. Mouthfeel: smooth, creamy, thick. Other notes: hardly any hops, somewhat decadent flavor, not very refreshing, heavy.

12 oz Bottle. Appearance is deep mahogany with medium, off-white head that quickly dissipates. Aroma is toasted malts with note of caramel. Taste is heavily malt with roasted grains, toast, and a mild caramel sweetness. Practically zero hop character or bitterness. Palate is full-bodied, smooth texture, soft carbonation, and a long sweet finish. This beer belongs in the upper tier of German Doppelbocks.

500ml bottle / $2.49 @ Whole Foods. The dirty, sandy, head dissolves to lacing edge in no more than 20 seconds. Clear body is the color of strong, pekoe tea. Lacing goes from frosty or semi-frosty to nothing in four seconds. Aroma is hoppy and hard wood, nuts and a little floral. Taste is a medium bitter and a mild salty with some distant sweet floral play. One might characterize the taste experience as maple syrup or (floral) honey. A little rye bread aroma carries in the tasting. Tastes healthy. Palate is medium full and creamy with good, mouth-filling carbonation and fairly abrupt finish. A good deal on a good dopplebock.

Bottle. Pours a deep red-brown with a pronounced cinnamon head. Nose is light and has notes of molasses and spice. Smoky on the tongue; not much sweetness, and there’s definite elements of nuts and roasted grain. Finishes clean, and has a creamy touch to the mouthfeel. One of the classics.

Pours a medium-dark brown with a slight red tint. Aroma is sweet with a hint of alcohol. Flavor is sweet and caramelly. Good, full bodied with a roasty finish. Solid.

Bottle in a mug - pours dark amber with little head. Malty aroma and I detect chocolate with a roasted character. Taste is sweet. Aftertaste is long and leaves a coffee quality. Overall, a tasty brew that is not overpowering with its malts.

Pours a deep red-brown; tall foamy tan head. Fragrant hoppy-sweet aroma. Taste is rich toasty caramel malt. Almost syrupy rich but balanced with a healthy amount of hops. Taste is awesome but it’s as rich if not richer than a big belgian dubbel...a little on the cloying side. Overall, it’s a top quality beer.

The best beer i’ve ever had! It’s my absolute favorite. Dark, malty, nutty flavored, full-bodied...it’s delicious! Goes great with Thai curry, Gruyere cheese, just about any meats, bar-b-ques, sausages, brats...etc. Once cooked Nathan’s hotdogs in it...OMG! ;p
