From 12oz green bottle pours vibrant ruby with quickly diminishing mixed-bubble beige head. Prominent Pils malt toasty-rich aroma in this medium-lean bodied, smooth lager. The Pils sweetness dominates the flavor. Also, there’s rich dark malt and cola notes, with a mid-palate noble hop bump followed by a balancing alcohol warmth that goes a bit towards fusel.

12oz bottle. Deep brown color with a beige head that goes away quickly. Aroma is prunes, some tropical fruit. Taste is sweet dried fruit, some tropical fruit, some chocolate, roasty malt. I haven’t tried many doppelbocks, but I enjoyed this beer and would have it again.

Single bottle from W&M Mansfield. Pours out a deep ruby brown color. Light tan head that goes away to nothing. Intense aroma of earthy fruits and malts. Flavor is smooth and earthy. Some toffee, some caramel, some chocolate, some berries and cherries. Well balanced. Gets better with each sip!

Bottle at home. Aroma has fortified wine, dried figs, prune juice, raisins, toast. Full bodied with a rounded mouth feel. Medium carbonation. Flavor of oxidized malts, fig compote, oloroso sherry, fresh wet bread dough. Lightly bitter finish. A great specimen of a style that I don’t seek out often enough.

I have no idea what the hell Optimator means but it’s a badass name that fits this brew nicely. Once you get this doppelbock out of the shitty green bottle it has a seductive dark body with a generous tan head. The aroma consists of warm booze and fruity, complex malt tones. The flavor is rich and slightly roasty at the start. At the middle of the mouth, there’s a hell of a lot going on - candy-like sweetness, dark fruit, toffee, chocolate - it’s all there. Finish is a little spicy which is nice because it helps to offset the maltiness. I was very impressed by the variety of aromas and tastes that this lager had to offer. I’d love to have one more and take another crack at identifying all of the nuanced flavors. Seriously though, Spaten, this beer deserves better than a green bottle.

Type: 12-oz. bottle Glass: Half-pint glass From: My wife’s dad Price: N/A Purchased: July 4, 2014 Consumed: July 6, 2014 Misc.: N/A Poured a dark mahogany, almost brown color with one finger of tan head. No lacing along the sides of the glass. No retention on the top. Smelled that 7.60% ABV right away. Also got caramel, toffee, plum, amber malts, light raspberry, light cherry and purple grapes. Tasted a bit darker than the nose. Still that berry - raspberry, cherry and juniper - caramel and plum. Medium body. Oily texture. Soft carbonation. Long finish. Really liked this one. Wouldn’t hesitate to try it again later.
