Very cool label and this black/brown beer surprised me. Nice hoppy kick up front and then a bit of roast. Aroma is faintly citrus that plays well against the blackness. Almost like a chocolate bar flavored with orange.

Bomber bottle. Pours black/mahogany, light tan head. Sweet malt aroma with a slight indistinct hint of hops. Taste is chocolate and coffee, bit bitter on the finish. Maybe call it a porter? Not alot going on but it’s decent enough. Too high ABV for sessioning really though.

First of all based on the flavor I think this has hop extracts. Basically a black Pliny. Something phony here. Hops in your face and all over the place.

22 ounce bottle purchased at The Davis Food Co-Op. The aroma on this is fairly sweet with some milk chocolate character present. Light herbal and piney hop notes. Not much else going on here. Not much roast or anything. Mostly transparent mahohany body with a frothy, light tan head that is pretty strong. Starts with a bit of an herbal, bitter hop bitterness, before this becomes a bit roasted and lightly burnt in the middle. Milk chocolate flavors come through in the finish. Medium body...not too dry or astringent. Ho-hum, ho-hum.

Labeled as a brown at the festival but this is a black IPA. Definitely on the mellow side of bitterness. Still a decent hop bite. Mostly this is an okay Johnny come lately black IPA.

Hm. When it comes to San Francisco black IPAs I prefer Back in Black. This is thin and more malt-forward to me. The Back in Black is more lively and hop-oriented yet with a good body as well. This Speakeasy actually kinda reminds me of a porter. I would definitely take an Anchor Porter or Uinta Dubhe Imperial Black IPA over this. To respect the intended style, I prefer Back in Black.

Draft at blind tiger with Linh. Pours a deep amber brown body with tons of down lacing. Aroma is light hop. Mouthfeel is medium to light with nice bitter hop and sweet caramel chocolate malt.

A - Pours a dark brown-black color with a finger of frothy khaki colored head. The head fades down fairly slowly leaving behind some nice lacing.
S - Aroma is a mix of roasted chocolate malts with some pine hops and a bit of citrus, and some coffee and bready smells.
T - Starts off with a mix of roasted chocolate malts and grapefruit and citrus hops with a bit of bitterness. Through the middle, some pine hops and a bit more bitterness comes through with some coffee and a bit of bready malts. The finish is a mix of chocolate malts, pine hops, citrus zest, and some roasted coffee.
M - Medium bodied with moderate carbonation. Feels smooth with a sweet and bready finish.
D - Very drinkable. Nicely balanced Black IPA with good malty flavors and just enough hops.

Bomber from Valley Farm. Nose is fairly typical for a black IPA. Roasty with some good hop character. Highly carbonated. Roasty with some dry peppery hop notes. Decent example of the style.

Bottle. Pours black with a little head. The aroma is oddly interesting. Has a smell I just can't put my finger on. The taste is strong on malt even though I didn't get much in the smell. Leaves a little bit of a bitter aftertaste. An ok beer.
