Butchertown Black Ale celebrates our 14th year by bringing back the long forgotten neighborhood of San Francisco where our brewery stands today. The nearby creek was once the home to over 16 slaughterhouses and was a thriving neighborhood till shipbuilding took over the waterfront in the 1930’s run up to WWII. The beer is a play on the senses: black as night, but with a deceivingly lighter body than the color would indicate and a dry-hopping regiment more akin to an IPA than a stout or porter.

Nice color and it has nice head retention. Smell is kind of mild, it doesnt have much of a smell. Taste malty and taste more like a black ipa than a black ale. Not to impressive, but i do like the label. Lol

On tap. Pours a solid black with a tan head and lacing. It has a nice aroma of earthy, piney hops and dark malts with a bit of coffee and chocolate. The flavor earth and resin up front with a coffee and hop bitter finish over a medium-heavy body. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Bottle. Strong hoppy citrus aroma. Flavor is dark malts, citrus notes but light on the palate. Decent black ale/ipa. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Sampled at an ESBLS tasting. It poured a clear dark brown color with a tan head. The aroma was of grapefruit, roast, light charcoal, orange zest, light pine and some light cocoa. The taste was of roast, grapefruit, charcoal, light pine and light cocoa with a crisp dry bitter lingering roasted grapefruit finish. Enjoyed this one.

Looks more like a very dark porter or a stout. Black with a frothy tan head and thick, sticky lacing. Nose is floral hops and reminds more of an IPA. Taste is bitter, but malty sweetness also comes through. Medium body, moderate carbonation, astringent finish. Good brew. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

A: Straight forward with chocolate malt, roasted barley and piney hops. A: Pours a dark brown-black color with a finger of frothy khaki colored head. The head fades down fairly slowly leaving behind some nice lacing. A great looking beer. T: Initially a mix of roasted chocolate malts, grapefruit and citrus hops with a bit of bitterness. Next some pine hops and a bit more bitterness with some coffee notes and a hint of bready malt notes. Finishes with a mix of chocolate malts, pine hops, citrus zest, and some roasted coffee notes. P: Feels a bit thin, but improved as it warmed. O: The hops start strong, but kinda get lost in the taste and excessive warmth. Decent Black IPA/CDA.

Lovely velvet texture. Robust body and porter backbone. Faintly boozy finish. Overall a delicious beer, though the hops character has a hard time peeking out from behind all that roasted malt.

Sampled at esbls. A black licorice aroma with big malts. A big bold flavor this leans toward the malts. Hops are in back but are nice. Citrus. Not too bitter. I like this. It gets into Belgian Strong Ale territority.

Sweet malty aroma, taste is black malt, anise. Nothing overly impressive. Not really hoppy or malty or thick. Just a black ale.

Absolutely solid Cascadian. Almost burnt malt notes, which is unique in my book, with balanced hoppiness. Wouldn't mind a tad more chewiness. A quibble. A- ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone
