COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Butchertown Black Ale celebrates our 14th year by bringing back the long forgotten neighborhood of San Francisco where our brewery stands today. The nearby creek was once the home to over 16 slaughterhouses and was a thriving neighborhood till shipbuilding took over the waterfront in the 1930’s run up to WWII. The beer is a play on the senses: black as night, but with a deceivingly lighter body than the color would indicate and a dry-hopping regiment more akin to an IPA than a stout or porter.

Bomber bottle. Aroma is dark malt and some hops. Appearance is black with a thick tan head. Taste is dark and roasty that turns hoppy, but not over the top. Palate is slightly hoppy, and dark. Overall, a good black ipa. Would buy again. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Elwood (3336) - Leesburg, Virginia, USA - JUN 15, 2013
Serving: Draft at Fire Works Leesburg. It pours almost black with a small tan head. The nose has a good bit of roast to it with slight notes of chocolate and light pine needles. The flavor starts off with nice roasted malt and chocolate notes, but segues into medium hop notes with pine and earth. Medium bodied with a medium finish. Black IPA? Nah, this is a porter. Wait, so is a black IPA…

Smells dark but kinda sweet at the same time. Black body with a tan, frothy head. Tastes like a chocolaty yeasty with a smooth finish. I would drink this with a dessert.

Bottle, shared with Parksy and Smitty. Dark brown with a light tan head. Aroma is sweet dark malts and slightly floral hops. On the palate, there is a fairly equal balance between dark chocolate malt and piney hops with a perfumey undertone. Medium bodied for such a high ABV. The hops draw out the bitter finish nicely. Solid.

Pailhead (5061) - Brownstown, Michigan, USA - APR 21, 2013
Bottle: The aroma consists of moderate chocolate, caramel, roast, light dust, espresso, and pine. It pours a dark brown with some orange highlights and a three finger beige head with great retention and leaves behind a lot of soapy webbing on the sides of the glass. The flavor starts with moderate chocolate, caramel, and a touch of vanilla. The finish has moderate roast, pine, espresso, dust, and a touch of burnt notes. It’s medium bodied with mild carbonation and a somewhat soft mouthfeel. Overall, another Black IPA that just makes me think hoppy Porter...not that that is a bad thing. I found this quite tasty.

-Roasty chocolaty malt aroma with healthy dose of piney, resinous, earthy, and citrus hops -pours a very dark brown with ruby highlights. Long lasting creamy off white head -strong roasty character, burnt in flavor with earthy resinous hop character -Medium bodied with medium co2, some warmth from alcohol burnt, roasty finish -enjoyable beer. A bit too roasty in flavor. Unbalanced flavor, but still a fun beer to drink. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone
