Butchertown Black Ale celebrates our 14th year by bringing back the long forgotten neighborhood of San Francisco where our brewery stands today. The nearby creek was once the home to over 16 slaughterhouses and was a thriving neighborhood till shipbuilding took over the waterfront in the 1930’s run up to WWII. The beer is a play on the senses: black as night, but with a deceivingly lighter body than the color would indicate and a dry-hopping regiment more akin to an IPA than a stout or porter.

A smooth ipa with a crisp roasted flavor. A really nice brew that is good served both cold or at room temperature.

Draft at Blind Tiger, NYC. Coffee and dark chocolate, some fresh mintiness from the hops. Refreshing IPA backbone. Roasty coffee with crisp oily hops as well. Tricked me at first when I smelled it, I thought for sure it was a strong stout, very cool. Nicely put together beer with solid stout and IPA components. Great black ipa.

On tap at Bailey’s, pours black with a small tan head. Aroma brings out buttery notes, lightly roasted malt, and light hops. Flavour brings out roast upfront, followed by a considerably harsh hop punch. Buttery palate, finishing on harsh woody, hoppy notes. Decent stuff, but a little off the mark.

Draft at sb. Pours a grainy dark ebony with a dense and creamy tan head with plenty of lace, and they stick around. Sweet roasty piney nose, nice combination. Creamy medium body with lively carb. Roasty piney mid palate with a lingering sweet finish. Nice stuff--clean and drinkable.

651 ml. bottle. Pours a thick, well retained, ivory head, with extensive lacing, over a clear, dark brown (SRM 30) body.......nose is chocolate, cocoa from the malts, pine, resin, grapefruit from the hops, esters minimal....taste is rich chocolate, cocoa, slight caramel/toffee, hints of coffee, from the malts, balancing pine, resin, citrus peel from the hops, finishing with a heavy, lingering bitterness......mouth feel medium, minimally sticky, no astringency, alcohol warmth present, carbonation adds a clean light acid finish. This is a typical example of the style, with high hop aromatics leaping out, only to have the flavors to be balanced out by the roasted, but not overly much, malts. The clean finish is wonderful and makes this rich confection refreshing. I do not care for dominant resin nose nor the coffee notes in the taste. BJCP 9/3/14/5/7

A deep dark IPA with a thick collapsing frothy brown head. In aroma, good floral hops with light chocolate notes, pungent and resinous. In mouth, a nice bitter chocolate with good floral and resinous hops, citrus pulp, well done. On tap at Downtown Brew fest LV 2013.

Bottle. Head is initially large, creamy, light brown, mostly lasting. Body is dark brown to black. Aroma is lightly to moderately malty (chocolate, roasted grain), moderately hoppy (resin, grapefruit), with notes of vanilla, alcohol. Flavor is moderately to heavily sweet, moderately acidic, lightly to moderately bitter. Finish is lightly to moderately sweet, moderately acidic, moderately bitter. Medium to full body, watery/creamy texture, lively carbonation, moderately alcoholic. A bit difficult to enjoy, but ok...too resinous in the nose, and too sour in the mouth. Nice appearance and reasonably good mouthfeel, and no real flaws to speak of, but overall kinda rough and mediocre.
