COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Butchertown Black Ale celebrates our 14th year by bringing back the long forgotten neighborhood of San Francisco where our brewery stands today. The nearby creek was once the home to over 16 slaughterhouses and was a thriving neighborhood till shipbuilding took over the waterfront in the 1930’s run up to WWII. The beer is a play on the senses: black as night, but with a deceivingly lighter body than the color would indicate and a dry-hopping regiment more akin to an IPA than a stout or porter.

Bottle from The Davis Beer Shoppe. Pours dark brown with a creamy tan head, but strong light comes through with a deep garnet color. Aroma is firmly pine. Med plus body. Flavor is lots of pine with some bready dark malt. Finish is pine. This is nicely executed. A new thing in the world.

22 oz bottle. Deep black pour with a tight tan head. The aroma is quite roasty with a lot of resiny/spicy hoppiness. A nice roast and dark malt character. It’s got a little bit of dank resinous hoppiness over a fairly roasty base. Sweet and a little bit earthy with a touch of light licorice and some fairly herbal hoppiness. Warming brings up some aromatic citrus hoppiness and the roasted malt character. A damn tasty Black IPA. Lean and hoppy with the dark malt integrating nicely.

On tap. Pours with a clear, near black body with a tan head. Aromas are roasty, with a ton of citrus. A bit spicy, maybe some rye? Flavors are fruity, grainy, citrusy (tangerine among others), roasty, dry, with a bit of mango. Somewhat strong esters. Medium bitterness that lasts, good carbonation. Pretty nice.

22oz bottle: Pours a barely transparent dark mahogany with a spotty-lacing light tan head. Has a fresh piney hoppy nose with some sweet toasty dark malts underneath. Starts with good fullness and lightly chewy dark caramel sweetness with a nice balance of resiny hops and a hint of chocolate before a bittersweet finish that hides the alcohol fairly well. Pretty true to style, but could use a slightly more citrusy hop profile for my tastes.

On tap at The Cannery. Its the way they make the style, a very good aroma of hops and roast Black with a big head and lots of lace. The taste does not deliver, its muted, but it is a smooth mouthfeel.

Nearly black in color with a tan head. Herbal and piney hops with a bit of roast and maybe licorice. A little bit of grapefruit peel and pineapple. Slightly sweet, only a moderate hop flavor. Some herbal and pine notes, not super hoppy, though.

Bomber from Wine & Beer Westpark. Pours a dark brown color with a very large frothy tan head. Decent head retention. Aroma of chocolate, roast and earthy, floral hops. The taste is chocolate malts, nutty notes, roast and an herbal hop finish. Medium bodied. Nice beer.
