COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Butchertown Black Ale celebrates our 14th year by bringing back the long forgotten neighborhood of San Francisco where our brewery stands today. The nearby creek was once the home to over 16 slaughterhouses and was a thriving neighborhood till shipbuilding took over the waterfront in the 1930’s run up to WWII. The beer is a play on the senses: black as night, but with a deceivingly lighter body than the color would indicate and a dry-hopping regiment more akin to an IPA than a stout or porter.

À l’ouverture une odeur resineuse de houblon. Ensuite des touches chocolatées et de café. En bouche une bonne amertume bien présente jusqu’à la fin. Toujours en bouche de belles notes chocolat et malt.

Absolutely solid Cascadian. Almost burnt malt notes, which is unique in my book, with balanced hoppiness. Wouldn't mind a tad more chewiness. A quibble. A- ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Bottle. Pours like a frothy stout, pitch black and topped with a rocky top of pock-marked off-white foam. The aroma is a bit sweet, and hinty at chalky java. This does indeed drink with a hint of coffee, but the presiding character is of sweet milk chocolate. Good stuff ... would go well with a cookie. (#4411, 12/18/2011)

Poured into my Speakeasy shaker. Color is black with a thick fluffy beige head. Aroma is sweet with resinous and grassy hops. Flavor starts with a touch of sweet maltiness and quickly transitions into some deep roastiness and a nice blend of hops at the finish. Light bodied with a slightly oily mouthfeel and a long finish thanks to the roasty/hoppy combo. This Black IPA is not as complex as others, but it’s a nice example nonetheless!

22 oz bottle. Deep black pour with a tight tan head. The aroma is quite roasty with a lot of resiny/spicy hoppiness. A nice roast and dark malt character. It’s got a little bit of dank resinous hoppiness over a fairly roasty base. Sweet and a little bit earthy with a touch of light licorice and some fairly herbal hoppiness. Warming brings up some aromatic citrus hoppiness and the roasted malt character. A damn tasty Black IPA. Lean and hoppy with the dark malt integrating nicely.

Labeled as a brown at the festival but this is a black IPA. Definitely on the mellow side of bitterness. Still a decent hop bite. Mostly this is an okay Johnny come lately black IPA.

First of all based on the flavor I think this has hop extracts. Basically a black Pliny. Something phony here. Hops in your face and all over the place.

Bomber from LaPrimera. Pours an inky black with a tan head leaving a lot of lace. Aroma has black patent malts, coffee, brown sugar and pine. Taste is of bakers chocolate, grass, bitter espresso, grapefruit and pine. Medium to full bodied and chewy. Nice roasty/grassy blend. Finishes nicely bittersweet, leaning a bit to the bitter side with a pinch of salt. This is a surprisingly excellent brew from a more typically mediocre brewer.

Strong earthy aroma with subtle molasses and roasted barley. Deep black with nice lacing against the glass. Big bitter hops upfront with a strong, earthy malt behind it. Pleasant notes of cocoa, molasses, strong resin, and roasted nuts greet the palate. All topped off with just the right amount of booze on the finish. Overall, full bodied with a great, complex flavor and strong bitterness. It’s really well done. I’d give this an A rating.

Bottled poured a deep amber with a tan head and fair lacing. Aromas are hoppy with subtle chocolate and vanilla notes. Flavors are hoppy...citrus, pine with subtle bitter cherry notes. The Finish - very light across the tung...fizzy! Bitter and dry with a trailing fruityness that lingers pleasantly.
