UPDATED: JUL 1, 2004 (Draft: Toronado in San Francisco, CA) Moderately malty, but not as malty as some of the double IPAs out there, so it’s not really in my upper tier for this category, but not too far behind; There’s lots of grapefruity hops from start to finish and a hint of orange citrus late in the finish, but not enough malt for an even balance; The bitterness is fairly strong, but not over the top; Mildy hoppy nose, but only moderately aromatic for a double IPA; Somewhat soft and luxurious mouthfeel; Light apricot in color and fully cloudy; Creamy, white head has long lasting retention and leaves lots of fairly dense lacing

On tap at Toronado in San Francisco. Very nice. I was happy they had this. Dark amber color with an off-white head. Strong hop presence. Citrusy flavor, with of course the hops all over. Doesn’t seem that strong of an ABV, but they masked it well. Dry finish. Very well done. The best Speakeasy Beer I’ve had!

UPDATED: JUL 30, 2005 Tap @ Barclay’s. Dark rust amber color with an off-white head. A grassy strong hop flavor with heavy bitterness. A solid but not great aroma. Rating #2 - Tap @ Toronado (7 3 8 4 17). A smooth copper color. Lighter than I expected for a double IPA. Dry, well hopped, and bitter. Rating #3 - Tap @ Toronado (6 3 6 3 14). Dark golden color wit ha white head. Some pine in the aroma on a sweet malt base with a nice bitter finish. Too much like the regular IPA and not much complexity.

very large orangesicle hop aroma, very nice golden orange color, tinge of lemon that is riding on a coaster of malt sweetness that ends with a hard hop kick that mellows quickly into the malt sweetness, very smooth and clean on the tongue

Gold color. Small white foamy head. Aroma is fruity and sweet. A medium to full bodied Imperial IPA. Malts are nutty and sweet. Hops are grapefruity and citrusy, fairly bitter. Nicely balanced. Seems more of a “strong ale” or a barleywine than an Imperial India Pale Ale. Very smooth flavor for such a big beer. Hides the 9.6% alcohol very well. Fairly bitter finish. Mouthfeel is full and round. Finish is clean and smooth. Aftertaste is bitter.

I'm glad that this amped up version of my favorite beer could be my 500th rating. Had this beauty on tap at Toronado, in S.F. Hazier than regular Big Daddy, but a similar, lemony-pine aroma. Taste has a bit more apricot to it, but it's still got that signature clean, fresh hoppy flavor undergirded by a wonderfully biscuity malt. The finish is BITTER! Wowsa, the hops cleanse you beautifully. An excellent example of a double IPA, not over the top, just an emphasis of what an IPA should be.

Very smooth tasting for such a massive aroma of hops and such high alcohol. The aroma was great, just like a floral garden of hops inside of the twin pines pine tree farm. Most impressive

UPDATED: JAN 6, 2006 On draught at the Toronado. It was love at first sniff. The aroma grabs you. Bitter hops. Hazy red orange color. Hops rise all over your mouth but enough malts to sort of balance. The finish was my favorite part.8/4/9/4/18 Bottle, from Odeed. Not like the draft I had. I don’t know wheater I thought the first one was that good or my palate has changed that much.

Excellent IPA. This may be a double IPA but it is still not overwhelmingly hoppy which is where many beers of this style tend to go. Perfect hop flavor with great aftertaste and fully dry. Best enjoyed with Thai food on the outskirts of China Town being served up by a friendly bartender at the Great Water, San Fran style.
