American hops provide a smooth distraction for Payback Porter’s robust strength, which is concealed within the shadows of dark imported malts.

Very, very tasty. Well balanced. Licorice malty chocolaty notes. Beautiful color with thick head that goes away a bit too quickly. Long aftertaste. Definitely one of my favorites.

Bottle. Moderate toasted, dark chocolate and strong coffee for the malt, light herbs and resin for the hops, light earth for the yeast, and raisin, soy sauce, vanilla and alcohol in the background. Head is small, bubbly, off-white with good lacing and is mostly diminishing. Color is very dark, almost black. Flavor starts moderately sweet and lightly acidic, then finishes lightly to moderately acidic and bitter. Palate is medium, silky and has a soft carbonation and a touch of chalkiness in the finish. This is an excellent Porter, so well rounded and full in every respect.

Bomber. Pours a dark brown color with a good inch of thick cappuccino like head. Pleasant aroma of roast malt, coffee and cocoa powder. The taste kicks off with a strong roasted malt flavor backed by citrusy hops and bittersweet chocolate. Also some light roast coffee and orange peel in the mix. There’s a surprisingly strong citrus presence that nearly overpowers the dark, roasty flavors. The alcohol is also much more subtle than I was expecting. Definitely not your run-of-the-mill Porter.

22oz in shaker. Deepest brown with low tan head, scads of lace. Slight molasses and acrid aroma. Flavors of dark chocolate, ginger snaps, and mild medicinal herb tea. Body is a little thinner than I remember from a draft pint at Zeitgeist a few months back.

Bottle at a Blue Palms Brown Bag blind tasting. Pours with a deep brown body and a small, off-white head. Aroma of roast, some dark fruits, chocolate, molasses, toffee and light earthy hops. Taste is roast, dark fruits, dried fruits and a bit of earthiness. Decent amount of coffee. Feels decently big. Medium carbonation.

Mild roast with subtle chocolate and coffee notes and just a touch of hop support. Slight alcohol evident after warming a bit. Dark brown with ruby highlights, fairly clear with a beautiful frothy tan inch thick head that fades slowly and leaves nice lacing on the glass. Taste is subtly sweet with a medium+ malt presence and a great medium hop bitterness to balance. Medium body with a creamy texture, medium carbonation and a wonderfully long and slightly dry / astringent finish alternating between the sweet and bitter. Very enjoyable porter that is substantial enough to warm one up on a cool night and is also refreshing enough to cool one down on a warm night. Well done.

Dark brown with red glimts and a medium creamy deep beige head. Sweet aroma with hard roasted malt, dark chocolate, coffee, hops and drying hops. Flavour came out dry with hard roasted malt, dark chocolate, grapefruity hops, coffee and hints of english liquerice. Finished dry and bitter.

Location: Draft at Hop Devil, as Hunter’s Point Porter, 7/17/10

Aroma: The nose has some roasted notes, chocolate malts, and some coffee
Appearance: Pours a dark brownish-black color with a dark tan head
Flavor: It has a nie roasted flavor, some chocolate and vanilla notes
Palate: This beer is rather smooth, slight bourbony feel, fairly full bodied and well-rounded
Overall Impression: I thought that was a pretty enjoyable porter. Lots of nice flavors and an enjoyable feel. It drinks nicely, it is well-rounded, and it just seems to work pretty well. Very solid stuff.
