American hops provide a smooth distraction for Payback Porter’s robust strength, which is concealed within the shadows of dark imported malts.

Brought back from my recent trip to SF. Poured into a pint glass. 4.0 A: Black color. Two fingers of pillowy light brown head with average retention and a good bit of lacing. 3.5 S: Roasty with moderate coffee and chocolate component. Biscuity overall with light caramel sweetness. Smells pretty good other than a faint "industrial" aroma, that may or may not stem from the hops, which are mainly earthy and barely citrusy. 4.0 T: The taste is like the nose, but with different proportions. Equally roasty and sweet. Roasted coffee flavors offset by sweet dark caramel. Mild bitterness with earthy hop flavor. Again there’s the industrial component. Not sure what it actually is. No hints of booze at all. 3.5 M: Lighter medium to medium body. Carbonation is a bit more aggressive than I’d like. Reasonably creamy and smooth overall. 4.0 D: A couple categories were borderline next step up. If not for strange "industrial vibe" this brew gives off, it would be a very tasty one. Still, not a bad beer and I would drink it again. Serving type: bottle Reviewed on: 06-27-2011 18:28:32

Bottle. Obsidian black in the glass. Lightly carbonated with tiny bubbles and thus a short lived tan head. Looks like a warm cola. Toasty nose that smells as much like black olives as it does beer. Creamy and mildly toasty flavor. Good mouthfeel and nice dark chocolate flavors linger on the palate. Hops don’t dominate (as they shouldn’t eighths style) but they are present and give good balance. Good but not exceptional.

Bottle:   Lucious little Porter here.   Deep deep brown, lovely head, large and foamy, light beige, nice lacing.   Smooth, oh so damn smooth on the tongue.   Soft roastiness, a little bit of coffee and chocolate.   Now this a Porter!   Smells like a Porter Milkshake!   Soft hops, which is preferable.   I am not a big Porter fan, but this one makes me forget all those nasty astringent or overly hoppy messes that most people call a Porter.   Yeah, good stuff this is!

Rich brown body with a thin tan head and a bunch of bubbles noticeable. Strong roasted malt aroma with some chocolate and coffee, but mostly a very roasted malt. Medium-bodied; Strong roasty flavours with a lot of sugars, a touch of lactic flavours and a bit more roasty and tobacco notes at the end. Overall, a good porter, strong and potent, but showing good complexity. I sampled this 65 cL bottle purchased at Draeger’s Market in Danville, California on 18-March-2011 sampled in Danville, California.

25-Feb-10 (22-oz bottle: Purchased 13-Feb-10 for $4.99 at BevMo in La Jolla, CA) Nice to see a new Speakeasy brew in bottles, even if it’s one I’ve seen on tap from time to time. A malt-driven porter, there is lots of medium-sweet, dark chocolate, coffee and cream, moderately bitter roast, and slightly ashy wood, and hops don’t seem to have a noticeable impact. The nose is very toasty, somewhat burnt-smelling actually, with a fair amount of dark chocolate, earth, and wood. Medium in body, dry and somewhat astringent on the palate, and moderately carbonated. Very dark brown in color, opaque except for some ruddy translucence at the very edge. The dark-tan head rises to half an inch on the pour, settling to a full, filmy layer and wide ring, but several rings of lace adorn the glass. A very good robust porter brewed in the American style, but the slightly burnt character is a minor drawback.

22 oz. Bottle. Dark black, almost opaque, thick tan head that laces very nicely. Aroma is malty, chocolate, coffee. Roasted malt on the palate, smoky, light bitterness. Full bodied but still very smooth, well balanced.

Draught from tiger. Smallish head. Nice little porter that hits all the proper notes for the style.

On Draught whilst watching a killer Allman Brothers tribute band at the Boom Boom Room, San Francisco. Black as a Crowes wing with a smallish tan head. Roasted malt nose with some dark chocolate and coffee notes. Similar elements in the flavour which was nice n’smooth with great balancing hop bitterness. A really decent porter to drink away those statesboro blues.
