American hops provide a smooth distraction for Payback Porter’s robust strength, which is concealed within the shadows of dark imported malts.

Requisite coffee and chocolate, but with some lingering citrus acidity and licorice. A hint of vanilla. Courtesy of Brandon on our trip to SF in 2014.

650ml brown bottle. Black pour, creamy beige head on top. Good lacework. Chocolately nose. Taste has cocoa, coffee, burnt malts. Light hop bitterenss and roasty finish. Smooth and clean for it’s strength.

An average, predictable porter without the nuts and bolts of a wiser, more sophisticated offering. Obligatory velvety black finish misleads you into lame waters. Not much going on, but it’s not entirely a lemon, either.

Nice and dark pour but not as dark as others I’ve had recently. The scent is clearly that of a stout but I felt that it was lacking somehow, perhaps in strength/boldness. There is minimal "bitterness" in the aftertaste, at least, for a seasoned stout drinker like myself. I rate this "Very Good"!

Bottle. Pours a very dark brown color with a very thick tan head on there. Nose is very slightly roasty, with a bit of bitterness really coming through. Taste is roasty and a little sweet, with just a hint of chocolate. Just seems a bit underwhelming to me.

UPDATED: APR 24, 2014 Bomber thanks to michaelinwa. Pours black with a medium foamy head that fades to a ring with big bubbles. Aroma is mostly roasted malt with some cocoa, burnt wood, and espresso. Tastes like roasted coffee and chocolate. Burnt wood and ash in the finish and a nice lingering vanilla taste too. Medium body, fairly high carbonation, and a slightly creamy mouthfeel. Very enjoyable porter.

22 ounce bottle. Translucent black, brown color topped by a big rocky tan head. Rich roasted malt aroma has hints of charred wood. Bittersweet roasted malt flavor has notes of licorice and smoky malt. Tasty and smooth, with notes of cocoa and spicy hops. Very good and a must try.

A killer porter overall with tons of big roasted malts, big espresso notes and a underlying but heavy hop profile. The pour is purely black with a thick foamy tan head. The nose is sweet and roasty with big espresso and coffee notes as well as light chocolate and vanilla accents. A mildly fruity hop in the middle peaks out amidst heavy roasted notes. The finish is bitter and lingers on for sometime adding a good balance of rich, roasted malts and contrasting hop bitterness.

On tap at Joe Canals West Deptford.
Appearance: Deep opaque chestnut body with a foamy light tan head.
Aroma: Slightly smokey with sweet chocolate, burnt malts and a hint of roast. Boy this smells very nice.
Taste: Balanced bittersweet chocolate and burnt malts with a touch of smoke throughout. The finish is slightly astringent of burnt malts and bitter chocolate, but it is appropriate. This is damn near a perfect porter.
Palate: Medium bodied, moderately carbonated.
Overall: This is a damn good porter, the price is the only downside to this that I can really think of. This is up there with Founders Porter and Great Lakes Edmund Fitzgerald.
