American hops provide a smooth distraction for Payback Porterís robust strength, which is concealed within the shadows of dark imported malts.

22 ounce bottle into tulip glass, no bottle dating. Pours fairly pitch black color with a 1-2 finger dense tan head with good retention, that reduces to a small cap that lingers. Nice soapy lacing clings on the glass. Aromas of big dark chocolate, milk chocolate, cocoa, roasted malt, coffee, toast, caramel, toffee, floral, light char, light nuttiness, light pine, and roasted earthiness. Damn nice aromas with great complexity and balance of roasted malt notes with a fair amount of hop presence; and good strength. Taste of dark chocolate, cocoa, milk chocolate, roasted malt, toast, toffee, caramel, coffee, light char, light nuttiness, floral, light pine, and roasted earthiness. Slight coffee bitterness on the finish; with lingering notes of chocolate, cocoa, roasted malt, toast, caramel, toffee, coffee, light char, floral, light pine, and roasted earthiness on the finish for a good bit. Damn nice balance, complexity, and robustness of roasted and dark malt flavors; with a light amount of hop balance and zero cloying sweetness after the finish. Medium carbonation and body; with a very creamy, smooth, and slightly chalky mouthfeel that is great. Alcohol is very well hidden with only a slight warming noticed after the finish. Overall this is a really excellent porter style. Great robustness and balance of roasted flavors; and very smooth to sip on. Really enjoyed this one.

Pours a dark brown black color with a nice java head. Nose is not typical of most porters, chocolate, very nutty and malty. Taste is nutty with off chocolate . Finish is tart, not your typical porter. quaff score 5 / 10

Appearance: silky near-black pour, with a surprisingly thick and creamy tan head, with decent lacing. Aroma: rich bittersweet dark and milk chocolate, cream, vanilla, brown toast, coffee. Taste: roasty dark malts dominate up front, with chocolate, caramel, cream, and a bit of nuts; then thereís a wave of mellow, slightly piney hops. Finish: smooth, roasty, slightly dry, with a bit of chocolate pudding flavors lasting the longest. Notes: Really enjoyed this porter. Smooth, creamy, roasty, chocolatey, everything I look for. Probably one of the top two or three standard porters Iíve ever had.

Bottled. Black pour with a fine tan head. Excellent lacing. Chocolate yeasty nose. Chocolate, coffee, malty. Little to no hop character. Nicely bitter finish. An extremely well balanced porter. One of the best examples I've had. Ranks up there with Edmund Fitzgerald. ---Rated via Beer Buddy from my iPad.

Opaque dark brown body under a tall tan head. Spicy roast malt aroma. The flavor is slightly sweet with notes of chocolate, coffee and nutty caramel. I like that it isnít overly sweet and not bitter. Smooth and rich.
