3.4 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20
25-Feb-10 (22-oz bottle: Purchased 13-Feb-10 for $4.99 at BevMo in La Jolla, CA) Nice to see a new Speakeasy brew in bottles, even if it’s one I’ve seen on tap from time to time. A malt-driven porter, there is lots of medium-sweet, dark chocolate, coffee and cream, moderately bitter roast, and slightly ashy wood, and hops don’t seem to have a noticeable impact. The nose is very toasty, somewhat burnt-smelling actually, with a fair amount of dark chocolate, earth, and wood. Medium in body, dry and somewhat astringent on the palate, and moderately carbonated. Very dark brown in color, opaque except for some ruddy translucence at the very edge. The dark-tan head rises to half an inch on the pour, settling to a full, filmy layer and wide ring, but several rings of lace adorn the glass. A very good robust porter brewed in the American style, but the slightly burnt character is a minor drawback.

22 oz. Bottle.
Dark black, almost opaque, thick tan head that laces very nicely. Aroma is malty, chocolate, coffee. Roasted malt on the palate, smoky, light bitterness. Full bodied but still very smooth, well balanced.

3.9 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20
On Draught whilst watching a killer Allman Brothers tribute band at the Boom Boom Room, San Francisco. Black as a Crowes wing with a smallish tan head. Roasted malt nose with some dark chocolate and coffee notes. Similar elements in the flavour which was nice n’smooth with great balancing hop bitterness. A really decent porter to drink away those statesboro blues.

4.2 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 17/20
Bottle… This beer rocks!… Pours pitch black with a small, creamy, beige head. Great retention. The aroma is a fantastic mélange of espresso, deeply roasted malts, dark chocolate and toasted tree nuts with whispers of anise and black licorice. Full-bodied and chewy with laid-back carbonation. The flavor provides sweet, robust espresso and dark chocolate flanked by black malt and American hop bitterness that is anything but overbearing. Bittersweet, mocha and licorice finish. Perfect breakfast porter… mainly because I drank it at 8:30 AM. World class beer!

Very, very tasty. Well balanced. Licorice malty chocolaty notes. Beautiful color with thick head that goes away a bit too quickly. Long aftertaste. Definitely one of my favorites.

3.9 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
Bottle. Moderate toasted, dark chocolate and strong coffee for the malt, light herbs and resin for the hops, light earth for the yeast, and raisin, soy sauce, vanilla and alcohol in the background. Head is small, bubbly, off-white with good lacing and is mostly diminishing. Color is very dark, almost black. Flavor starts moderately sweet and lightly acidic, then finishes lightly to moderately acidic and bitter. Palate is medium, silky and has a soft carbonation and a touch of chalkiness in the finish. This is an excellent Porter, so well rounded and full in every respect.
