COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
American hops provide a smooth distraction for Payback Porterís robust strength, which is concealed within the shadows of dark imported malts.

Very, very tasty. Well balanced. Licorice malty chocolaty notes. Beautiful color with thick head that goes away a bit too quickly. Long aftertaste. Definitely one of my favorites.

22 ounce bottle purchased at the Davis Food Co-Op. Aroma on this is really nice. Lots of chocolate sweetness present with a little bit of roastiness. Mostly opaque black-colored body with a large light brown, frothy head. Leaves good lacing. Very attractive. Starts a little roasty, with some light astringency. Coffee roasts come through in the middle. Finishes with a nice burnt bitterness. Great mouthfeel with just the right amount of carbonation. Ethanol is hidden well. This is a fantastic porter!

Excellent porter. Pretty dark brown/black. Loveliness in the nose feels. Sweet and rich. Very glad to have had a chance to try this one.

Nice and dark pour but not as dark as others Iíve had recently. The scent is clearly that of a stout but I felt that it was lacking somehow, perhaps in strength/boldness. There is minimal "bitterness" in the aftertaste, at least, for a seasoned stout drinker like myself. I rate this "Very Good"!

Coal black with a two-finger espresso-colored head and thick, splotchy lacing. Very strong aromas of coffee, cocoa and burnt firewood with a hint of vanilla and dark cherries. Sweetness up front from the malts is reminiscent of dark fruit, followed and overwhelmed by wonderful mocha and roasted malt flavors. Subtle hops bitterness keeps things in balance. Medium to full bodied, little carbonation to speak of, and a rich coffee and chocolate aftertaste. Alcohol is not noticed. This is great.

Aroma is dark malts, fruit and a strong hint of acidity. The flavor is dark malts, fruit, notes of tropical fruit, a hint of nuttiness and a medium acidic finish.

Appearance: silky near-black pour, with a surprisingly thick and creamy tan head, with decent lacing. Aroma: rich bittersweet dark and milk chocolate, cream, vanilla, brown toast, coffee. Taste: roasty dark malts dominate up front, with chocolate, caramel, cream, and a bit of nuts; then thereís a wave of mellow, slightly piney hops. Finish: smooth, roasty, slightly dry, with a bit of chocolate pudding flavors lasting the longest. Notes: Really enjoyed this porter. Smooth, creamy, roasty, chocolatey, everything I look for. Probably one of the top two or three standard porters Iíve ever had.

Requisite coffee and chocolate, but with some lingering citrus acidity and licorice. A hint of vanilla. Courtesy of Brandon on our trip to SF in 2014.

UPDATED: JUL 31, 2010 Bottle from City Beer, drunk at home, 20th March 2010. Black with a tan head. Heady aroma of alcohol, wood and iodine. In the mouth, molasses, caramel and liquorice. Smooth, full body, feels just right.

Original rate: 6/4/8/4/17. On tap at Zeitgeist, San Francisco, 27th March 09, with Phyllis. Pure black with the slightest hint of a head. Nice porter flavours with a little liquorice and restrained roastiness.
