American hops provide a smooth distraction for Payback Porterís robust strength, which is concealed within the shadows of dark imported malts.

Nice roast flavor to this porter. Great value as well, copped a 22 for 4 dollars at the local store. Overall itís a pretty good porter, and not that this matters at all but I love the artwork on the bottle as well.

Bottle, shared with Robbie and Grippitis. Dark walnut brown, lighter brown head. Roasty with some nice fruit accents, soft mouthfeel, quite full bodied, with a moderate bitterness and subtle hop presence. A flavourful drinkable balanced porter.

Pours rich dark brown with a nice creamy lasting light brown head. Aroma has lots of dark chocolate and smooth coffee. Flavor is a good mix of chocolate, coffee, and Moderate hoppiness. Moderate roastiness and bitterness. Nice even amount of sweetness. Moderate dryness. Alcohol starts to show up as it warms. Medium body. Really nice.

I poured a 22oz bottle into a tulip glass. There was no freshness date and it cost $1.99 ($0.09 per ounce).

Appearance: Black as night opaque body with a large, dark tan, frothy head which laces and retains tremendously.

Smell: Similar to that of an RIS with a strong black grape and chocolate syrup presence.

Taste: I should disclaim this review by mentioning I got this bottle at my local beer store off the clearance rack, which is usually where expired beers are kept. However, Iím not so sure thatís the case as Speakeasy Payback Porter still tastes and drinks as well as a seemingly fresh bottle. Just like the nose, the palette here is akin to that of a Russian Imperial Stout, only much less intense. Itís certainly stronger than your average porter, though, with strong notes of dark fruit, chocolate and grape.

It starts out on the sweeter side with a familiar and traditional robust porter assortment of flavors. Dark cherry, black grape, chocolate syrup, clove, and a touch of dairy flavor are all prominent right away. Some bitterness at the crest of the swig with just a hint of roasted malt. It ends just as it begins with the same flavor notes, only in reverse order. Itís not a particularly sticky, chewy or cloying palette, but itís sweet enough to be a true porter rather than a stout, as the hops and roastiness are subdued.

Drinkability: If Speakeasy Payback Porter were a stout, Iíd look at the 7.5% ABV on the label and think of it as a relatively light beer. However, I went into this expecting something heavy and I was not disappointed. This is a big bodied brew in every way, though the actual delivery process is quite nice. The mouthfeel is thick, calm and soft, but with a velvety texture and smooth finish. It finishes fairly clean, though there is some residual sweetness. It works as a dessert in a glass (though itíd pair well with a steak Iím sure), and I had no trouble handling the entire bomber myself.

Pours semi-opaque cola brown with a 3-finger dark tan head. Nutty and dark roasted malt aromas, with a light citrus note. Body is medium and lightly oily, with a brief, dry finish. Flavor of nutty roasted malt, with a touch of coffee bitterness and some citrus underneath from the hops.

Dark black on the pour. Wanted more from the aromas but the taste of sweet chocolate and light coffee and perfect hop flavors makes up for it. A bit silky on the palate.

Requisite coffee and chocolate, but with some lingering citrus acidity and licorice. A hint of vanilla. Courtesy of Brandon on our trip to SF in 2014.

650ml brown bottle. Black pour, creamy beige head on top. Good lacework. Chocolately nose. Taste has cocoa, coffee, burnt malts. Light hop bitterenss and roasty finish. Smooth and clean for itís strength.

An average, predictable porter without the nuts and bolts of a wiser, more sophisticated offering. Obligatory velvety black finish misleads you into lame waters. Not much going on, but itís not entirely a lemon, either.

Nice and dark pour but not as dark as others Iíve had recently. The scent is clearly that of a stout but I felt that it was lacking somehow, perhaps in strength/boldness. There is minimal "bitterness" in the aftertaste, at least, for a seasoned stout drinker like myself. I rate this "Very Good"!
