2.9 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 11/20 PilsnerPeter (3019) - Flushing, New York, USA - OCT 14, 2012
Notes from my backlog: Deep brown near black pour with a thin tan ring of head. Roasted coffee aroma, some charred barley- one dimensional. Thin fizzy body. The malt presence is lacking. Mainly coffee notes in the flavor. Some resiny quality. Eh.
3.7 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 16/20 joeneugs (2141) - Livermore, California, USA - APR 7, 2011
Pours dark brown with a nice off white head. The aroma is pretty much straight up spent coffee grounds. The flavor is the same with a medium body and a good strong finish. A bit one dimensional, but if you like coffee beers this is a good one. The alcohol is very well hidden.
3.7 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 14/20 GG (1980) - NorCal, California, USA - AUG 21, 2010
Tap @ Beer Revolution
Aroma - enormous coffee aroma, some molasses & dark sugar but just an explosion of coffee.
Appearance - black body with a dense, 1" tan head, very nice retention
Taste - sugary coffee drink, coffee and more coffee.
Palate - smooth, slightly cloying, long bitter coffee finish
Overall - quite easy to enjoy. At a mid 7 ABV, it doesn’t overwhelm.

Tap at Rattle N Hum. Deep black pour with a sticky tan head. The nose is great. Lots of fresh coffee over a soft cocoaish base. The beer does have a vegetal character that I could probably do without. Loads of coffee in here though with a distinct herbal component to the brew. A bit of spiciness as well. Oddly, as the beer warms the vegetal character kind of dissipates leaving a nice rich mocha like character. The base beer gets hammered a bit, but it’s still a pretty well-made brew.

Draft @ R’n’H. Black pour with tan head. Great aroma of espresso and roasted coffee dominating. Roasted coffee, espresso and some dark malt flavors. Very smooth texture.

Tap, City Beer Store. Lots of coffee. Probably a bit too much, really. Much of the nice chocolate flavor in Payback is lost. The coffee flavor is good, but these sorts of beers should be happy marriages between the dark malt and coffee, and, in my opinion, they didn’t quite pull that off here. I’m a big fan of Ritual coffee, and this beer certainly does have a nice iced coffee feel. However, the coffee is a bit bland and simple in this beer. As for appearance, it’s quite similar to the base beer - very dark brown/red, verging on black liquid, dark beige head. Mouthfeel is good, though I would prefer it even thicker. All in all, it’s a good beer, particularly for fans of coffee stouts/porters.

Tap at City Beer. Clear deep dark ruby with a small tan head, fading to a tattered film before long. Aroma of freshly cold pressed earthy roasty coffee, light spicy pepper notes. Flavor adds a bit of dark chocolate chips and a light caramel sweetness. Bitterness peaks at a 3 in the roasted finish--no burnt or ashy notes! Light prickly carbonation with a light to medium body. Pretty good coffee beer.
4.2 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 17/20 badlizard (5154) - Berkeley, California, USA - MAY 13, 2010
Black with a fizzy white head. Big strong coffee aroma up front. Some chocolate notes but a huge coffee flavor with an earthy finish. Excellent.

Tap at Rattle’n’Hum. Cool, very roasty coffee aroma, nothing but. A little bit of chocolate I guess if you dig. Tastes like iced coffee with little else. 3.5 seems generous, but at least it was tasty. Good but boring.

Draft. Pours a black body with an off white head. Espresso, roast y coffee tones, light vanilla. French roast, solid bitter coffee tones, with a light sweetness. No warming to speak of, mild body, fantastic if you ask me.
