Speakeasy Ales and Lagers is happy to introduce Scarface Imperial Stout. A complicated brew – behind its fiercely black exterior is a mélange of subtly different roasted malt flavors that add nuance and depth to a style of beer that is too often heavy and one dimensional. To add a bit of roundness to the flavor we diverted about 20% of the brew into our Heaven Hill bourbon barrels, one of which we topped up with cacao nibs from our friends at local San Francisco organic chocolate makers, TCHO, for a period of oak-aging before blending it back into the primary batch. This is a special beer that reveals a little something different about itself every sip. A deep dark stout with a thin brown head. In aroma, a sweet chocolate with smooth floral hops, piney and pungent. In mouth, a nice chocolate malt with smooth licorice, piney hops, alcohol warmth, very nice.

Poured opaque black with a one-figer brown head that retained great and left very nice lace. Chocolate is stronger than coffee on the nose, but both are strong. Also picked up some cherries and plums. Wonderful coffee and cappuccino flavors with dark fruit that lingers in the aftertaste. Rich, creamy, full bodied, decadently rich finish.

Bomber from Windy City. Black in color. Strong roast nose with a hint of sweetness and a dash of hops. Roasted coffee up front. Moving into some chocolate. Finish is subtle hop bitterness. Alcohol is well hidden. Tasty stout. Good straightforward impy.

Pours dark brown with three fingers of thick tan head. Smells of roasted malts. Tastes of roasted malts, coffee, bitter, cocoa, and a little alcohol. Has medium carbonation with lasting malts on the tongue.

Drank as a draft in a bar by the Pacific. Tastes like a good imperial stout but with something strange. Maybe it’s the bourbon barrels but something’s wrong here. Not bad but not very good.

Stunning and unusual imperial stout. Strong chocolate aroma. Taste is roasty stout, not sweet from the malt -- but just a beautiful infusion of bourbon from the aging (apparently just 20% is aged). Adds sweetness and gives the beer an added complexity. Wow. A. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Bomber from Jane’s Beer Store. Beer’s 100th rating! Black with a medium, heavy lacing, long lasting cinnamon tan head. Nose is chocolate, chocolate, more chocolate, roast, vanilla, coffee, and a slight hint of bourbon. Flavor is lightly sweet, lightly bitter chocolate. I would have scored it higher if the bourbon had a slightly higher prominence.

A nicely carbonated brew. It pours very dark and the head dies down to leave a fine layer of foam. In the aroma I picked up on roasted malts, mild coffee, hops, slight sweet bourbon, and dark chocolate. The flavor is mildly bitter and balanced in flavor. I noticed roasted malts, espresso, bitter chocolate, toffee, sugar, hops, and a slight licorice flavor. The finish has a pleasant bitterness with a very minor dryness. I notice a smooth weak bourbon, lite coffee, chocolate, hops, and a sweet malt aftertaste. Overall this was a fine complex brew and worth trying.
