COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Speakeasy Ales and Lagers is happy to introduce Scarface Imperial Stout. A complicated brew – behind its fiercely black exterior is a mélange of subtly different roasted malt flavors that add nuance and depth to a style of beer that is too often heavy and one dimensional. To add a bit of roundness to the flavor we diverted about 20% of the brew into our Heaven Hill bourbon barrels, one of which we topped up with cacao nibs from our friends at local San Francisco organic chocolate makers, TCHO, for a period of oak-aging before blending it back into the primary batch. This is a special beer that reveals a little something different about itself every sip. Malts: American 2-row, Belgian Dark Caramel, French Coffee Malt, Chilean Black Malt and English Roasted Barley Hops: Columbus Alcohol by Volume: 9.5% 70 IBUs

Bottle, thanks Jason! Thick black pour, tan head. Aroma had notes of pine, and resinous hops, leading into chocolate, coffee, roast, and some dark fruit. Hoppy stout for sure, big pine up front leading into nice dark malt, with notes of chocolate and coffee, touch of vanilla from the bourbon, and a roasty dry finish. Nice brew.

22 oz. bottle, pours jet black with a medium foamy light brown head. Aroma is very roasty and chocolatey, with loads of woody, roasted malt, chocolate brownies, not much barrel presence, and a considerable hoppiness factor. Flavour is very woody, roasty and hoppy, with chocolate brownies to start, shifting to a very pronounced woody mid-flavour, finishing quite hoppy and bitter - slight boozy finish as well. Quite harsh with some jagged edges, though it’s solid overall. Becomes more and more harsh with each additional sip making drinkability low.

Thanks to thirdeye11 for sharing this beer. This was a 22 ounce handbottle filled at Bierkraft in New York. The beer pours a dark brown color with a khaki head. The aroma is dark chocolate and roasted malt. The flavor is more of the same with coffee, chocolate and roasted malt. Thick mouthfeel and medium carbonation.

Draft at Stone Bistro. Poured an opaque black color with a thin brown head. Nice enough aroma that included the likes of distinct smoked bacon, chocolate liqueur, date, molasses, and roasty malt. Medium to full bodied with a relatively slick mouth feel and a warming effect from the booze.

Tap @ The BeerMongers... Poured jet black with a thin, light brown head. Nose had diacetyl and roast. Well, this was a buttered, caramel popcorn, diacetyl of a beer. Was unfortunately because I was really looking forward to it. Hints of chocolate, roast, and malt sweetness.

On tap at Stone Bistro. Pours a dark dark reddish brown, with tan head. Smoke, roasted malt, notes of burnt coffee, campfire, earthy peet malt, and even a hint of bacon. This is a very smokey imperial stout. Not the best out there, but the smoke is a variation on the usual. Fairly heavy mouthfeel, and the abv is not noticable.

On tap at Pi Bar. Big, intense looking black pour with a thick one-finger tan head. Interesting aroma of roast, dark chocolate, anise, oak, and bourbon. The flavor is slightly sweet and slightly bitter with dark chocolate, molasses, bourbon, earth, and licorice. Full bodied with average carbonation for the style and a slightly tannic mouthfeel. Some boozy warmth. Fills you the hell up. Solid effort from Speakeasy.

Appearance: Black with a nice amount of tan head and some lacing
Aroma: Roasted malts, smokey, coffee
Taste: Roasted malts, chocolate, coffee & hot alcohols
A decent stout. This was another of my favorites at the festival
