Speakeasy Ales and Lagers is happy to introduce Scarface Imperial Stout. A complicated brew – behind its fiercely black exterior is a mélange of subtly different roasted malt flavors that add nuance and depth to a style of beer that is too often heavy and one dimensional. To add a bit of roundness to the flavor we diverted about 20% of the brew into our Heaven Hill bourbon barrels, one of which we topped up with cacao nibs from our friends at local San Francisco organic chocolate makers, TCHO, for a period of oak-aging before blending it back into the primary batch. This is a special beer that reveals a little something different about itself every sip. Very dark beer that tastes just as dark, like a coffee or chocolate. The maltiness is very prominent, almost overwhelming. Easy to taste the alcohol content. Tastes a little bit messy, but still full flavored.

Black pour under a thin khaki hued head. Big chocolate and roast and light clove/cinnamon tone almost like a Mexican chocolate cake, but sweeter and with a dose of milk chocolate. Rich flavor that’s bright and roasty, with loads of bittersweet dark chocolate, some kind of earthy spice, a little less spice and Mexican-like than the nose but there’s still something there--with a weirdly almost pineapple-like tone near the end. There’s something odd in there I can’t put my finger on, it’s not just boozy dark chocolate and roast malt with a hint of coffee. Hard to put my finger on. But it’s delightful nonetheless.

Appearance: nearly opaque black with brown around the margins, one fat finger of medium dense light beige head, excellent retention and chunky lacing. (4/5) Aroma: roasty malts, dry cocoa, liquorice, hint of bourbon barrel. (7/10) Taste: moderate sweet, moderate biter. (7/10) Medium body, soft carbonation, dry bitter warming finish. (3/5) Yeah, I know it’s supposed to be spring, but I’ve got too many of these dark things on hand, gotta drink ‘em down. Not all that impressive an imperial stout - tends a bit to the thin side, and the barrel notes are muted, even after warming. On the up side, it’s not heavy, so it’s fairly easy drinking for a nearly double digit ABV. Pleasant enough. (14/20)
