3.9 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20
"Payback is a super nice Porter already. The smoke here threatens to overwhelm, but never does. Big bodied, rich, malty, with ample smoke on the nose and in the flavor. Compliments the roasted malts well, especially on the palate. Solid."

3.6 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 13/20
Bomber - black pour with a soapy tan lace - nose of cocoa, vanilla bean, espresso, tobacco, moderate wood and smoke, light acidity - creamy texture - medium sweet, but the moderate, prickly acidity and earthy smoke balance the sweetness nicely - chocolate, tobacco, moderate woodsmoke - the dry, earthy finish allows the smoke to pop, so even though the smoke flavor is not strong, it manages to shine none-the-less - solid smoked porter.

3.8 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 15/20
Black body with a thin chocolate head. Nice smokey and sea air salt nose blends splendidly with the roasty malt base. Salted chocolate sea shore body with a smooth chocolate roastiness that is accentuated by a gentle smokey salt. Quite lovely, albeit a bit on the salty and sweet side.

3.2 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 11/20
Black pour under a foamy light khaki head. The aroma reminds me of fingerprint from kindergarten. There’s a bit of earthy plastic with some rauch malts and dark rustic malt tones. The flavor is also a bit rustic and smokey, with a wee bit of espresso and smoked pork. Dark burnt caramel flavors underneath. Not shabby, just not my thing.

3 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 2/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 12/20
Appearance: Pitch Black; Thin Cola/gold ring around the perimeter; Zero head; zero lace
Smell: campfire smoke; smoked meat; chocolate;
Taste: Smoked meat; chocolate; lingering bbq smoke
Mouth-feel: Medium carbonation; balanced malt/hop; dry finish
Overall: Solid Smoked porter; I would like fewer meat notes and additional coffee notes, and a little more head and body.

3.8 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 14/20
651 ml bottle. Pours a thick, well retained, tiny bubbled, light beige head, with some lacing, over a brownish black (SRM 35) body.....nose is light coffee, chocolate, hints of toffee/caramel, light smoke from the smoked, roasted malts, light herbs from the hops, minimal esters....taste is light smoke, light coffee, chocolate from the malts, leading to a light bitter finish, with hints of herbs from the hops.....mouth feel light of medium, slightly sticky, alcohol hidden, carbonation creates a creamy mouthful, with a clean slightly acid finish. This is a nicely balanced beer. The smoke was used with a light hand, and added complexity to both aroma and flavor making for an interesting and a quite good beer. BJCP 8/3/15/5/8

3.8 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 16/20
Bottle. Pours a very dark brown with tan head, settles in minutes with some thin lacing. Aroma is smoky, roasted, chocolate. Flavor is heavily roasted, dark chocolate, with a mildly smoky, roasted finish and aftertaste. Nice malt profile. Moderate carbonation, medium body, and crisp texture. Carbonation could be toned down a bit, it always prevents the flavor from coming through fully. Wouldn’t classify it as a smoked beer, but a very pleasant smoky porter. Really enjoyed this beer.

3.1 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 12/20
Head is initially average sized, frothy, brown, mostly lasting.
Body is black.
Aroma is moderately malty (chocolate, caramel, roasted grain), lightly hoppy (herbs), with notes of manure, scorched earth/peat, vanilla.
Flavor is moderately to heavily sweet, lightly acidic, lightly bitter.
Finish is lightly to moderately sweet, lightly acidic, lightly to moderately bitter.
Medium body, watery/syrupy texture, lively carbonation, lightly alcoholic.
I must admit the horse manure odor is a little off-putting...I’m all for rusticity, and it works well when it’s part of a complex larger picture of similar elements, but it’s not the best pairing for normal clean porter smells like chocolate and vanilla. And yeah, it’s really more manure-like than smoky. Also a little syrupy sweet for me, but seems reasonably well-made in general...no off notes (unless you consider the manure smell to be off).

3.4 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20
Bottle:   Black, moderate frothy light brown head, nice lacing.   Very soft roast, slight ash, not too much smoke.   A bit more smoke on the tongue.   Roasty, not too bitter, very light sweetness.   Seems a tamer example of Alaskans example, and without that silky body.   Body and mouthfeel are moderate.   Finishes with a soft lactose sweetness, very pale roast, and even softer smoke and ash.   Light Smoked Porter, but clean and with a decent balance.
