This limited edition Payback Porter uses cherry wood smoked malts for a rich, smoky flavor that perfectly compliments the notes of bitter cocoa and espresso.

Pours a dark chestnut grown color that appears pitch black and opaque in the glass with mahogany edges and a two finger, pillowy beige head that slowly settles into a thick, lasting ting. The glass is left coated with streaks of soapy lacing. Smokey and robust dark malt aroma with a really nice balance of smoke, roast and sweeter malt notes. Very nice smoke/Rauchbier character with hints of charcoal, liquid smoke, butane and barbecued bacon. This is complimented by deeply roasted dark malt notes of burnt toast, gourmet espresso bean, bitter dark chocolate and oatmeal. The smoke and roasted malt notes are countered by subtle lighter malt sweetness. Iím picking up sweeter silky chocolate, caramel, toffee and roasted nut. The nose of this beer has nice complexity and great balance. Enough smoke for fans of the style but not overpowering to the point where it smells like liquid campfire. Iím a huge fan of smoked beers and regular Payback Porter so thankfully this beer doesnít disappoint. I would have preferred a little more smoke but otherwise this is a very solid variation of the regular version. Very well balanced with strong smokiness up front giving off hints of smoked meat, campfire, ash and charcoal but itís not harsh, acrid or overpowering, letting the roasted malts and sweeter notes of regular payback porter come through. The smoke is complimented by robust, deeply roasted malt flavors. Decent amount of dryness with hints of burnt wood, dark roasted coffee bean, bitter dark chocolate, oatmeal and charred toast which is countered by sweeter, dessert-like lighter malt flavors. Some bakerís chocolate, toffee and caramel sweetness rounding out the finish. Slightly dryer than I prefer and again, could use some heavier smoke, but otherwise this was an enjoyable beer thatís pretty easy to drink considering the style and complexity.

Draft at the pourhouse. Pours pitch black with a small off white head. The aroma has milk chocolate, roasted malt, a slight coffee note. The taste is dark and milk chocolate, big roasted character, not getting anything smoked...

"Payback is a super nice Porter already. The smoke here threatens to overwhelm, but never does. Big bodied, rich, malty, with ample smoke on the nose and in the flavor. Compliments the roasted malts well, especially on the palate. Solid."

Bomber - black pour with a soapy tan lace - nose of cocoa, vanilla bean, espresso, tobacco, moderate wood and smoke, light acidity - creamy texture - medium sweet, but the moderate, prickly acidity and earthy smoke balance the sweetness nicely - chocolate, tobacco, moderate woodsmoke - the dry, earthy finish allows the smoke to pop, so even though the smoke flavor is not strong, it manages to shine none-the-less - solid smoked porter.

Black body with a thin chocolate head. Nice smokey and sea air salt nose blends splendidly with the roasty malt base. Salted chocolate sea shore body with a smooth chocolate roastiness that is accentuated by a gentle smokey salt. Quite lovely, albeit a bit on the salty and sweet side.

Black pour under a foamy light khaki head. The aroma reminds me of fingerprint from kindergarten. Thereís a bit of earthy plastic with some rauch malts and dark rustic malt tones. The flavor is also a bit rustic and smokey, with a wee bit of espresso and smoked pork. Dark burnt caramel flavors underneath. Not shabby, just not my thing.

Vintage:2013 Appearance: Pitch Black; Thin Cola/gold ring around the perimeter; Zero head; zero lace Smell: campfire smoke; smoked meat; chocolate; Taste: Smoked meat; chocolate; lingering bbq smoke Mouth-feel: Medium carbonation; balanced malt/hop; dry finish Overall: Solid Smoked porter; I would like fewer meat notes and additional coffee notes, and a little more head and body.

651 ml bottle. Pours a thick, well retained, tiny bubbled, light beige head, with some lacing, over a brownish black (SRM 35) body.....nose is light coffee, chocolate, hints of toffee/caramel, light smoke from the smoked, roasted malts, light herbs from the hops, minimal esters....taste is light smoke, light coffee, chocolate from the malts, leading to a light bitter finish, with hints of herbs from the hops.....mouth feel light of medium, slightly sticky, alcohol hidden, carbonation creates a creamy mouthful, with a clean slightly acid finish. This is a nicely balanced beer. The smoke was used with a light hand, and added complexity to both aroma and flavor making for an interesting and a quite good beer. BJCP 8/3/15/5/8

Bottle. Pours a very dark brown with tan head, settles in minutes with some thin lacing. Aroma is smoky, roasted, chocolate. Flavor is heavily roasted, dark chocolate, with a mildly smoky, roasted finish and aftertaste. Nice malt profile. Moderate carbonation, medium body, and crisp texture. Carbonation could be toned down a bit, it always prevents the flavor from coming through fully. Wouldnít classify it as a smoked beer, but a very pleasant smoky porter. Really enjoyed this beer.
