On tap at Speight’s bar, Temple. Sweetish malt aroma. OK in mouth, bit too sweet. Decent tingly hop on finish. Hop had a sting. Malt is a little syrupy.

2.2 AROMA 4/10 APPEARANCE 2/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 9/20
Probably the one NZ beer I’d pick out of the usual bottled selection in a NZ bar. Good fruity malt nose and flavour, too sweet and has a not so good aftertaste, chemical and acrid? Is this really ale? I get the feeling it’s a malty dark lager....almost a dunkel with no style?!

2 AROMA 4/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 3/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 8/20
Sampled on Flashy’s tour of LA, New Zealand and Hong Kong of September/October 2007 - A surprisingly dark beer for a NZ one. Heavy, but smooth, though lacks a bit of hoppiness and a bit too sweet for my liking.

3.6 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 14/20
Canned 33cl. It pours a beautiful ruby beer with a creamy, long lasting beige head. The aroma is of malt of a wonderful blend. Single malt, Christmas Pudding, dark chocolate, hay and marshmallows. The taste is of the same with quite a lot of molasses coming through. A very pleasant mouthfeel. Medium bodied, malty and rather sweet. The finish is of dominating molasses with hints of marshmallows and Roquefort cheese with some pleasant bitterness showing up.

3.4 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20
Dark ruby red with a small beige head. Fruity and sweet aroma. Flavour has a caramel nature with a medium roastiness which is very pleasing. A bit thin and way overcarbonated. Really good, especially for something without a high price tag.

3.2 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 13/20
Toasty, nutty, biscuity malts with some caramel in the nose. Very clear brown body is topped by a decent and lasting off white, fine bubbled head. Nutty caramel malt flavour dominates the grassy green hops. Some dark malt bitterness lingers at the finish. Medium light body is somewhat astringent. Could easily be taken as a mild considering the ABV. Bottle (Gift, Feb-07) sampled with Oakes in Spring 2007. Thanks, E!

3.1 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 13/20
Bright burgundy colour. No head. Light toffee on the nose along with almonds and walnuts. Light demerara, nuts, hints of earth and caramel. Sort of thin but not bad character if you take it as a mild.
