4.5 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 18/20
On tap at the Speights Alehouse. Very nice taste. Aromas of burnt caramel and chocolate. Taste is sweet, with light bitterness, and long length. Palate is velvety, and medium bodied. Black, with a frothy head.

Itís unfortunate they donít bottle this beer any more. From the tap, itís invariably too cold. I canít get any aroma. It gets a 5 for not being unpleasant though. Nice, woody, milky flavours of roasted malts and bitter chocolates (with no coffees to overwhelm it). Savoury finish, a bit like Marmite or Oxo. I forgive the beer for being a bit on the lighter side. This could be among the best of New Zealand porters.

2.4 AROMA 4/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 9/20
Dark with a brown head. Flavour of coffee, roasted malts, quite sweet. Dry palate, thin body. A good beer comparing to other Speigthís. But the palate is not enjoyable as a porter should be.

Draft. A black beer with a brown head. The aroma has notes of roasted malt and wood as well as lighter notes of soy sauce. The flavor is sweet with notes of mlat, caramel, and wood, leading to a dry roasted finish. The mouthfeel is smooth.

3.7 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20
Draft at Speightís Alehouse in Greymouth. Pours red-black with a creamy tan head. Aroma of chocolate, malt, caramel, roast, coffee, and smoke. The flavor is roasty with a lot of chocolate and those follow through to the finish. Really smooth and full bodied, but just a wee bit watery, which keeps it from being a higher-shelf porter. Still, I liked this one a lot and it certainly beat expectations.

Sampled on tap at the brewery. Wow! This was a surprise! Pours very dark with a dense brown head. Aromas of burnt malt, chocolate, brown bread. Rich roasty malt flavour, some chocolate, coffee, vegemite, with a slightly minerally finish. Full bodied, nice flavours.

3 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 11/20
Pours black, brown edges.
Aroma is full of roast malt character; coffee & choclate pervade with a distinct sweetness.
Flavour has the roast malt coffee, which comes through strongly. The only let down is a thin body, kind of watery.
Overall, a surprise from this brewery and definitely their best offering.

3.1 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 11/20
The aromas are sweet - chocolate tones with mild coffee and vanilla, some roasted malt.
Flavours are of dark chocolate and burnt toast. Quite sweet, kind of like golden syrup.
Hints of what seem to be a smoky flavour, with bourban and a coffee bitterness near the end.
Quite weak bodied for a porter. Finish is dry and relatively long lasting, with flavours of coffee and strong cocoa.
Not bad at all... But then again, Iím a sucker for porters.

On tap, Speights Ale House FerryMead. Black beer with red streak to it. Nice strong aroma. Tastes like a beer from a speights Brewery. Quite a full bodied beer. Roasted malt and quite bitter. Not my favourite porter though.
