3 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 12/20
330ml bottle. Dark rosy black, however couldnít get a head no matter how vigerous I poured. Sweet inky bourbon nose with a woody/musty palate. Char notes with areasonable dry finish. Not bad and one of the better ones from the Speights range.

UPDATED: MAY 6, 2012 Not bad Speights, not bad. Finally theyíve got one almost right. Possibly a wee bit thin even for a porter but on the whole thoroughly enjoyable from the bottle. Quite possibly the worlds only summer porter that goes well with a few quiets in the evening and the scent of grass clippings in the air.
I just wanted to recall a previous rating and take a moment to say how right I was. Not a pat on the back for me, but to the brewers for putting out a consistent product which isnít half bad.

2.6 AROMA 4/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 10/20
Couldnít get in to this one. Just did nothing for me and I usually love a good porter. It didnít look half-bad in the glass; tannish head forms but recedes back to a thin, creamy layer that frosts down the entire glass. The beer itself is a clear, deep brown with a touch of red. Slightly tannic, coffee bean and cola soda nose with just a smidgen of dusty cocoa. Much more in control in the mouth with that tannic, astringent malt still noticeable but itís roughly balanced by a wave of powdery mocha and smoky burnt grains. Soft touch of caramel and biscuity malts seem to compliment it as it finishes off slightly bitter with more smoke lingering long, long after the swallow. After the initially harsh carbonation wanes, it became quite creamy on the tongue. Body is a little thin for a beer thatís trying to emulate the late, great London porters of the Industrial revolution, and itís recommended serving temperature doesnít do it justice. I served one up at cellar temperature and it was a lot more enjoyable. Not overly sessionable as I found myself growing tired of it after just a few sips. Still not a bad beer, just didnít excite me like it did the rest of the raters. Average. (33cL, 13/07/06, Intíl Beer Shop, W. Leederville)

3.6 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 15/20
Aroma: fruity and malty notes with a hint of hop. Appearance: poures with a hint of red but pretty much pure black with a great steady tan head that leaves sheet lacing on the side. Flavour: massive hit of mixed malts just a very tiny hint of mocha and smoke. Palate: medium mouthfeel with lots of carbonation. Lingering almost celery and apple notes in the background but otherwise really great.

Geez Iíve been looking for this stuff for years after tasting it at the beer festival a while back. Itís about damn time it made it here. Textbook porter aroma; iced coffee Big M, caramel, marshmallows and oil, very much like Lion Stout actually. Softly sweet jersey caramel malt, with milky artificial coffee flavour like that sweet stuff you get in a tube at the supermarket. Really soft, round and creamy like Lion Stout too, but itís a touch vacant and even watery in the middle. Dryish, grainy finish without much hop character, but it works. Really quite good, but itís a bit clean and could do with a bit more guts. A bit more (ie. any) yeast and (again, any) hop and this would be top shelf. As it is, itís very good.
