Inspired by traditional refectory ales brewed by monks for the monks’ table, Spencer is a full-bodied, golden-hued Trappist ale with fruit accents, a dry finish and light hop bitterness. St. Joseph’s Abbey in Spenser, Massachusetts, is home to a community of Trappist monks and the first American Trappist brewery. Following the Benedictine tradition of ora et labor (prayer and work), the monks pursue a simple life of contemplative prayer, a manual labor and hospitality. The brewery helps support the monks and their charitable outreach.

Had to try my last trappist beer, now that I’m back in the States and have moved out of the Netherlands. Thoughts: Aroma - spicy and floral/fruity - nothing too special, although quite a standard mix of belgian aromas. Appearance - nice cloudy golden with a decent froth, looks appealing to me. Taste - Similar to the nose, perhaps a little bit watery but a nicely balanced beer with a mild bitter after finish, and a light malty backbone. Palate - bit spicy but quite smooth and creamy feel, not bad considering its only 6.5% ABV. Overall - I like the beer, very drinkable. But clearly not the top of the trappist class, I much prefer Rochefort, Chimay, or Westvleteren.

Pours a cloudy gold on tap with a frothy white head. Moderate lacing. Nose is standard Belgian: banana, clove, some funk. Taste is sweet and fruity with notes of spice. Medium body, lively carbonation. Very tasty brew.

Bottle courtesy Omgrich of and shared with the Shape crew.

330 ml. bottle. Opens a gusher with about 20% loss. Pours a medium, well retained, off white head, over a hazy, particle laden light amber (SRM 8) body....nose is heavy spice with dominant clove tones, light toasted malts, banana/bubblegum, no hops, balance to the yeast.....taste is slightly sweet, with moderate spice notes, with heavy clove accents, banana/bubblegum, light malts, hints of florality, finishing slightly drier, with light hops bitterness.......mouth feel, medium body, minimal alcohol, high carbonation. The gusher aspect of this beer is off putting. The aromas and flavors are muddled and relatively nondescript and as a result "unclean". Better attenuation before bottling might correct all, or a different yeast, or a change in fermentation temperature. BJCP 7/1/13/4/6

11.2 oz bottle. Clear orange with a white head. Nose is honey, yeast, clover and grass. Medium body, a bit oily, with fizzy carb. Taste is bubblegum, honey, cardamom and rose water with a soft earthy bitterness. Simple yet sophisticated.

10 oz at Asbury. This is a cloudy light orange with a firm white head. Aroma is balanced and focuses on the yeast. Soft hints at banana, pepper, a dash of clove accentuate notes of straw and soil. Palate is medium with assertive carbonation. This is apparently a very basic recipe but the complexities of the yeast make it interesting. Light fruits and spices mix with spicy hops to simulate an array of pear, banana, pepper, bread and earth.

Pours a cloudy gold on tap with bubbly white head that dissipates to leave moderate lace. Aroma of banana, clove, and nice Belgian esters. Taste follows, big on the light fruitiness, sweet and spicy. Nice for the American guys to do something like this. Easy to drink, solid stuff, if not murky, but maybe I got end of the keg.

Bottle, thnx to Bytemesis. Pours a cloudy golden beer with a big white head on top. Aroma is very malty, sweet caramel, fruity yeasty notes and even a faint hoppy, grassy touch in the end. Flavor is quite yeasty, fruity, juicy, sweet with hints of apples and dried white fruits. Sticky. yeasty mouthfeel and finish. Nice carbonation going on here. Good stuff! Worthy of the trappist label.
