Inspired by traditional refectory ales brewed by monks for the monks’ table, Spencer is a full-bodied, golden-hued Trappist ale with fruit accents, a dry finish and light hop bitterness. St. Joseph’s Abbey in Spenser, Massachusetts, is home to a community of Trappist monks and the first American Trappist brewery. Following the Benedictine tradition of ora et labor (prayer and work), the monks pursue a simple life of contemplative prayer, a manual labor and hospitality. The brewery helps support the monks and their charitable outreach.

Bottle. Pours a cloudy orange brown with a thick white head. Aroma of Belgian yeast, bready malt, pears, apricots, light fruits, lemon. Flavor of sweet fruits up front, followed by malt and light peppery spices. A tasty Belgian ale, as good as any Belgian Trappist. 8/4/7/4/15 (3.8/5)

Poured from a 750ml bottle. There is a lot of yeast esters and phenolic, very weisse beer like. There are light notes of honey.

Bottle at SinH4’s Goodbye Event. A prototype of a Belgian ale, everything is just right, and it also has character. Smooth.

Golden copper color with white head. Fruit esters, banana, grassy hops, full caramel taste. Not too exciting, but just nothing wrong. Soft but high carbonation. Great beer!

Cloudy dark gold with yeast floaties, and a thin rocky white cap. Lovely aroma that’s yeast forward that, oddly enough, reminds me of plain hot dog and the bun it rests in, but also with a playful Belgian fruity ester. Crisp flavor that pops with Belgian blonde malts, bitter noble grassiness, a gentle bit of fruit, that funny hot dog tone from before, a little doughy but crisp and bitter and balanced all around. Kinda interesting.

Pours cloudy honey gold with creamy off-white head. Aromas are slightly sour, yeasty, bananas, sweet. Flavor is not as sweet as I was expecting, with a solid malty character and a relatively strong hop bitterness on the finish. Also an interesting, not unpleasant metallic character that makes it quite easy to drink and matches the hoppiness. Quite unique compared to other trappist beers, and quite pleasant, but is a little muddy.

On draft at Lansdale beer fest 6-27-2015. Light brown in color, not much head. Smelled good, dark fruits, malty. Taste is classic Belgian ale. Smooth, dark fruits, light banana, flowers, spices, yeast notes, malt. Body is on the lighter side but very enjoyable. Enjoyed a 3-4 oz sample 3x.********* I have been looking for this beer for a while now...surprised it was at a beer fest in PA..... 1st reason..the only trappist brewery in the states and the second reason is the name. It was not a let down and would like to get my hands on a bottle. Miss you Spencer!
