COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Inspired by traditional refectory ales brewed by monks for the monks’ table, Spencer is a full-bodied, golden-hued Trappist ale with fruit accents, a dry finish and light hop bitterness. St. Joseph’s Abbey in Spencer, Massachusetts, is home to a community of Trappist monks and the first American Trappist brewery. Following the Benedictine tradition of ora et labor (prayer and work), the monks pursue a simple life of contemplative prayer, a manual labor and hospitality. The brewery helps support the monks and their charitable outreach.

330ml bottle. Pours a hazy orange-gold with lots of sediment floating around and a large, frothy, long lasting, off-white head that laces. Sweet aroma of floral fruit, citrus, Belgian yeast and caramel. Sweet flavour of citrus, Belgian yeast, caramel, bready malt and grass with a dry, bitter finish. Medium body with an oily texture and average carbonation.

2015 BJCP Category: 26A Trappist Single

AROMA: Sweet orangepeel and honey plus slight clove/nutmeg spiciness. 9/12

APPEARANCE: Orange/cloudy amber. Body is hazy, but CO2 visible. Billowy off-white foam. 2/3

FLAVOR: More sweet than bitter, with pronounced orange character. Slight coriander or other peppery spice (from the yeast esters). Slight lemony/honey flavor indicative of oxidation. Yeasty. 14/20

MOUTHFEEL: Medium body; well-carbonated but not prickly. Goes down smooth and finishes dry. Not boozy. 4/5

OVERALL IMPRESSION: Probably an old bottle; doesn’t improve with age. Enjoyable for what it is, though. 7/10

Golden and medium-bodied. Spicy and malty aroma with a bit of noble hops, and a malty and phenolic flavour. Moderately sweet taste with light bitterness. Overall, a very good belgian pale ale. Great flavour from the yeast and good balance.

A honey and spicy yeast aroma, well balanced flavour, with enough hops to clean away the initial sweetness

Bottle from Grocery Outlet. Cheap. This one is probably past it’s prime, but you wouldn’t know it as it still presents itself really well. It pours an orange gold color with a tall, fizzy off white head. The aroma has toasted malt, some fruity plum and banana with hints of clove spiciness. Almost seems like a hefeweizen with more complex fruity esters. The flavor has lots of dried fruit and clove. Pear, plum, a little baked apple, cinnamon and clove. It has a dense, yet frothy mouthfeel. High carbonation. Moderate earthy bitterness. Pretty nice. Very solid.
