Inspired by traditional refectory ales brewed by monks for the monks’ table, Spencer is a full-bodied, golden-hued Trappist ale with fruit accents, a dry finish and light hop bitterness. St. Joseph’s Abbey in Spencer, Massachusetts, is home to a community of Trappist monks and the first American Trappist brewery. Following the Benedictine tradition of ora et labor (prayer and work), the monks pursue a simple life of contemplative prayer, a manual labor and hospitality. The brewery helps support the monks and their charitable outreach.

Drinking from a 30cl bottle. In the aroma alcohol, hop and coriander. The unclear orange beer has a medium white head. In the taste spices, hop, grapefruit. Medium high carbonated.

Bouteille 33cl, V&B Grenoble.

Pours a hazy orange color with medium white head. Aroma is fruity, palestone fruits, banana, yeast and bread with a good spicy backbone. Taste follows the aroma, green aple, bread, spices, palestone fruits, yeast and banana, but a bit boozy.

Lichtbruin bier zonder schuim.

Weinig bite, licht weeig.

Bottled. Pours slightly hazy golden with an average off-white head. Aroma of yeast, peachy notes and maybe some other fruit notes. Sweet flavor that ends up being more dry and slightly bitter. Medium bodied, oily texture and average carbonation. A nice Ale indee. 🌟🌟🌟🌟

Deep, thick, cloudy dark yellow color. The aroma is yeast and mustiness. There is some orange juice (including the acidity) here; like orange juice that is a week past the expiration date -- not necessarily a bad thing in this context. The flavor is lovely yeast funk: Belgian but like old-school Belgian. Has the same basement yeast mustiness as an Orval or La Trappe. I am really digging it. The flavors bloom as it warms up. This definitely needs to breathe a bit; it’s not quite as good as classic Euro Trappist stuff, but it’s damn good.
