COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Inspired by traditional refectory ales brewed by monks for the monks’ table, Spencer is a full-bodied, golden-hued Trappist ale with fruit accents, a dry finish and light hop bitterness. St. Joseph’s Abbey in Spenser, Massachusetts, is home to a community of Trappist monks and the first American Trappist brewery. Following the Benedictine tradition of ora et labor (prayer and work), the monks pursue a simple life of contemplative prayer, a manual labor and hospitality. The brewery helps support the monks and their charitable outreach.

12 oz bottle from Giant Eagle in Pittsburgh. I wish the Benedictine monks had made this when I was at Saint Vincent College in the 80s. A superb ale that proves the Americans can do it just as well as the Europeans. I like the label’s motto ’Pair with family and Friends’ which is always a good idea.

On tap at Hops and Pie poured a cler gold with asmall lasing white head. Aromas of straw, fruitiness and yeast. Palate was light bodied and smooth with a dry finish. Flavors of straw, yeast, earthiness and fruitiness with smooth dry finish.

Bottle from the Iron Abbey loft. Pours hazy orange with an immense, overcarbinated head that dissipates in a few minutes. There is some dead yeasties in the glass as well. The head leaves a gorgeous lacing. The aroma is very sweet with some dark fruit, brown sugar, maybe a touch of banana and fig. The taste has raisin, fig, plum, sweet finish. A very nice Belgian ale with a lower abv. The only downside is the price considering it isn’t imported.

Bottle. Pours slightly hazy golden with a white head. Aromas of spicy yeast, malts. A light sweetness, spicy yeast, a bit creamy/chalky rather than crisp. Medium bodied, lively carbonation, dry finish.

Poured from a bottle. Aroma is initially super fruity with a lot of Belgian fruit esters of stone fruit, faint banana and bubblegum. As the esters fade you get some nice clove and coriander phenolics with lighter pepper. Light caramel and burnt sugar notes. We have a gusher! Pours a slightly cloudy copper gold with a large, frothy white head that lingers for quite a bit and leaves behind a high amount of lacing. Flavor is moderately sweet with a large ester presence upfront of banana, bubblegum and stone fruit. As the esters fade you pick up some candi sugar and light caramel with a hint of toast. Medium phenolic notes of clove and coriander. Medium bitterness balances out the sweetness. A hint of alcohol. Mouthfeel is medium bodied with high carbonation. Low astringency and low alcohol warmth. Overall, a better beer than I was expecting when it gushed. Nice esters balanced with a good phenolic character that doesn’t turn to plastic. Some light malt and sugar notes compliment.

Has an authentic Belgian character without being too similar to any other beer. Medium-bodied. Hazy golden color. It has some great, subtle fruit flavors. Mild spice notes, and lots of yeast. Sessionable. They’ve followed the Orval model, by carving out a strong niche with a single beer. I’ll be buying this one on a regular basis.

Tasted at Birch & Barley, Washington, DC. Pours cloudy orange-amber with a generous off-white head. Nose is grass, lemon, cloves, spices, coriander, orange zest, and subtle yeast. Flavour is bitter hops, pine nut, lemon drop, spices, and cloves. Very interesting Trappist ale from the USA but I love the Belgians so much I can't help but compare. They win.

A really nice, easy drinking trappist ale. A touch of cloves and yeast notes. Great on the palate with a wonderful aroma.
