Inspired by traditional refectory ales brewed by monks for the monks’ table, Spencer is a full-bodied, golden-hued Trappist ale with fruit accents, a dry finish and light hop bitterness. St. Joseph’s Abbey in Spencer, Massachusetts, is home to a community of Trappist monks and the first American Trappist brewery. Following the Benedictine tradition of ora et labor (prayer and work), the monks pursue a simple life of contemplative prayer, a manual labor and hospitality. The brewery helps support the monks and their charitable outreach.

Visual: WARNING, GUSHER! Pours dirty orange brown with large suspended sediment, a small head with a fine 1mm layer of micro retention, clusters of active streams.

Nose: apricot-persimmon, honey-chamomile barley malts - interesting. (lvl-6)-pungency

Attack: crisp, tingly- small fizzy

Mid-palate: hints of apricot, honey-chamomile, (lvl-4-sweetness), light brown sugar barley malt

Finish: dry barley malt exhale, a tad thin, hints of woodiness, subtle bitterness

Summary: Decent all around quality of entry, taste and smoothness. I enjoyed the balanced sweetness and crisp mouthfeel. It’s also nice that it finishes dry and clean, unlike a typical Belgian which might get too heavy. The length I find somewhat short however.

Bottle: Orangey coloured, cloudy, gushing - but instantly collapsing loose off-white head; sweetish vinous and grainy nose with a slight sourish-yeasty touch; moderate bitter-sweet flavour, a delicate acidity is still detectable, medium bodied, quite soft; lingerin fruity-yeasty finish with an increasing itterness and a slight alcohol burn in the aftertaste. Surely drinkable, not great, yet...

(Bottle, 0.33 l, from Alko Arkadia, 20160930) The beer poured deep golden and hazy. Its head was medium sized and white. Aroma had fruitiness, Belgian style yeast and malts. Palate was medium bodied with medium carbonation. Flavours were fruitiness, Belgian style yeast, grass, malts and bitterness. Aftertaste was sweet, yeasty and bitter. Not a bad Belgian style brew but the finish is out of the character.

Bottle. Pours hazy dark straw with stable off-white head. Clear aroma of malt and fruit, wit notes of hops and flowers. Sweetish flavour of malt and fruit and yeast, with bitter, hoppy notes and floral touches. Hoppy and citric aftertaste. Rich body. Decent.

Bottle, 6.5%. Yeasty and spicy aroma. Freshly baked bread, cloves. Hazy dark golden colour. Big stable creamy white head. The flavour is a lot like the aroma. Yeasty and spicy with a mild sweetness and a good alcohol level to balance. Seems a bit stronger than 6.5%, I think. A really good clove note, distinct yet mild. Reminds me of the first times I had Trappists.

Golden orange, murky, small head, gentle carbonation. A: sweet malts, marsipan, citrus, bit boozy and chemical. T: nice sweet fruity maltiness upfront with orange peel notes. Low carbonation. Moves towards a malty citrus bitterness with light hairspray note. Light banana and bread in finish.

12oz bottle. Pours a cloudy pale orange color with a massive, but quickly-dissipating, foamy off-white head. Aroma is yeast, grass, clove, and spice. Taste is Trappist yeast, light citrus, and clove. Some pils malt. Spice in the finish. Slight acridness in the finish from the yeast. Minimal bitterness. Light-medium body. Medium carbonation. Slick mouthfeel. A little too watery.
