Inspired by traditional refectory ales brewed by monks for the monks’ table, Spencer is a full-bodied, golden-hued Trappist ale with fruit accents, a dry finish and light hop bitterness. St. Joseph’s Abbey in Spenser, Massachusetts, is home to a community of Trappist monks and the first American Trappist brewery. Following the Benedictine tradition of ora et labor (prayer and work), the monks pursue a simple life of contemplative prayer, a manual labor and hospitality. The brewery helps support the monks and their charitable outreach.

Pours a nice rich toffee color from the tap. Classic Belgian ale fruitiness, some candi sugar, dries out nicely. Good beer.

330ml bottle pours a golden orange color which gushed a massive head out of the bottle and filled the glass but settled to leave no head on the glass. Aroma is yeast and spice with some light fruits and herbs. Taste is a herbal hop bitterness with a light fruity and malty sweetness finishing with a dry yeast. Light to medium bodied with abundant carbonation that satisfies the palate with a pleasant sensation. Overall, a very well crafted Belgian style ale that is tasty and balanced. Recommended.

Light and fruity with a touch of herbal essence. Yeast is the real feature here. Love the spice and yeast play. It ranks up there with some of the better Trappist beers. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Bottle. Hazy orange in color with a whitish head. Biscuit, some yeasty and malty notes in aroma. Sweet fruity notes and grainyness in taste. Grassy, herbal and notes of citrus in finish.

330ml served in a Rochefort chalice. A: Pours a cloudy orange color with lots of thin particles floating inside. Forms a small but quite persistent creamy off white head. Forms and leaves a lot of lingering and molasses lacings in the glass. S: Great nose. Very sweet, fruity and spicy. Strong notes of caramel malts, sweet grains, coriander, banana esters, dry figs and flowery hops. Earthy hops. T: Slightly sweet upfront. Strong notes of pale and caramel malts followed by strong fruity and spicy notes. Again, coriander, banana esters, dry figs, candi sugar. In overall, taste is dry and mild bitter. Hops have a citrus profile giving it notes of grapefruit. Light metallic notes in the very end. M: Medium body. Medium to low carbonation. Banana and dry figs in the aftertaste. Persistent light to medium bitterness in the end. O: Good drinkability. Great Ale. I was not expecting such a good quality to this American Trappist beer.

Étiquette assez classe, avec une devise  : « pair with family and friends ».

Thanks to Kurt! Happy to try this one. Starting to feel a bit like it would never happen. 330 ml. bottle split by four. Hazy sparkling orange, big creamy off-white head. Nose is big on fish guts (almost something DE in that fashion) mixed with more BE notes, big banana & sugary sweetness. Big sweetness, big fish guts & very simple. Taste is the same, fish guts mixed with banana, vanilla, sugar, odd yeast, sugar, very sweet, big fish guts. Yeasty & fizzy body. Very simple not a big fan of this combo. Technically nothing wrong with this one but the profile etc. is really not appealing here. The very high score here,… A mediocre to average Belgian Ale at best in my opinion but it is the first USA Trappist beer so people go nuts.

small botlle at home. poured a cloudy dark golden orange-ish colour with a big white head. nose has borging crisp malts, bread, earth, and a ton of yeast, slight spicy aswell. bit of citrus, grains, and some ripe banana in the back aswell. leading to a slight spicy aftertaste. really just a boring beer. and i don’t understand why this need to be a authentic trappist. way to hyped. and some prices here for this is redicilous
