COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Inspired by traditional refectory ales brewed by monks for the monks’ table, Spencer is a full-bodied, golden-hued Trappist ale with fruit accents, a dry finish and light hop bitterness. St. Joseph’s Abbey in Spenser, Massachusetts, is home to a community of Trappist monks and the first American Trappist brewery. Following the Benedictine tradition of ora et labor (prayer and work), the monks pursue a simple life of contemplative prayer, a manual labor and hospitality. The brewery helps support the monks and their charitable outreach.

Bottle shared at a tasting. Pours a clear golden amber with a large frothy off-white head. Good head retention. Aroma of citrus, stone fruits, bready malt, spice, mild doughy notes. The taste is spice, bread, stone fruits, caramel, lemon. Medium bodied, mild lingering spice.

DocLock (8094) - Lower Pottsgrove, Pennsylvania, USA - JAN 9, 2015
Bottle from Whole Foods Plymouth. Pours hazy, bright golden with big, fluffy, white head and a shit ton of carbonation. Nose is nice and funky, old cheesy, yeasty, sweaty female feety, with notes of hopcitrus, apricot, and honey. Tastes candi sugary malty, yeasty, somewhat sweet, with hopcitrus, tart fruit, and a medium palate heft and complexity. Not a world class beer, but a damned good effort.

4oz pour at Churchkey comes a clear gold with some creamy, white head. Nose has a lot of yeasty esters, clove, baking spice, chestnut coney, candy sugar. Flavor starts ok, banana, clove, cinnamon but ends in this very strong mint toothpaste thing. Hard to finish. Bad keg?

UPDATED: JAN 15, 2015 Bottle at Eulogy and later on draft at Monks. Cloudy orange pour. Frothy off-white head. Lots of carbonation. Fizzy on the tongue. Tastes as if brewed with proper Begium yeast. Bittersweet orange biscuits. Citrusy and bready. Some blonde caramel malts. Mildly herbal and floral. Lavender. Cloves. Thyme. Pink peppercorns. Dry grassy finish. Feels maybe just a bit too clean to match the other Trappists.
