Inspired by traditional refectory ales brewed by monks for the monks’ table, Spencer is a full-bodied, golden-hued Trappist ale with fruit accents, a dry finish and light hop bitterness. St. Joseph’s Abbey in Spencer, Massachusetts, is home to a community of Trappist monks and the first American Trappist brewery. Following the Benedictine tradition of ora et labor (prayer and work), the monks pursue a simple life of contemplative prayer, a manual labor and hospitality. The brewery helps support the monks and their charitable outreach.

Sampled from a bottle purchased at Utobeer in Borough Market (near London Bridge). Pous a haxy orange/gold colour with a big white head. Very nice aromas of malt and caramel. The taste is very satisfying with flavours of ripe banana, caramel, apricots and spices. Pleasantly moderate bitterness in the aftertaste. A very good and well-made beer, Highly recommended.

Gusher. Big offwhite head. Hazy orangey body. Fruity mealy over-ripe banana aroma with papery notes. Fruity mealy taste, again with over-ripe banana. Mealy, oily mouthfeel. Fullish body. Dirty earthy taste with fruit notes. This is gross. Not sure what’s happened, but no way am I drinking this. (0.33l bottle, from Fish & Beer, Copenhagen.)

Bottle 0,33ltr: Cloudy blonde colored brew with an nicely dry bitter taste with hints of fruits, spices and some caramel. Looks like an Leffe Blond becoming North-West Pacific American. Bought this at the abbey of Achel.

Bottle. Cloudy golden body, medium head. Aroma has typical Belgian yeastiness with some honey and floral hops. Pretty wheaty taste with lightly sweet honey and herbal hops. Refreshing. A good classic Belgian Blonde. It’s nice that it follows traditions and is not unnecessarily overhopped.
