Inspired by traditional refectory ales brewed by monks for the monks’ table, Spencer is a full-bodied, golden-hued Trappist ale with fruit accents, a dry finish and light hop bitterness. St. Joseph’s Abbey in Spenser, Massachusetts, is home to a community of Trappist monks and the first American Trappist brewery. Following the Benedictine tradition of ora et labor (prayer and work), the monks pursue a simple life of contemplative prayer, a manual labor and hospitality. The brewery helps support the monks and their charitable outreach.

Poured to a shaker at the WCD Trade Expo 2015 in Chicago, showing a hazed, orangey gold, almost amber hue, with a frothy layer of cream colored head foam, and wavy cling to the lacing. The nose was light Belgian yeast, soft malt, some esters as apricot, and light spice. Medium bodied, with somewhat lively carbonation, the taste continued the pit fruit notes, with modest earthiness to the hop bitterness, some creaminess to the mouthfeel, and a pleasantly dry finish. A very presentable, home spun version of the monk’s pride.
