Inspired by traditional refectory ales brewed by monks for the monks’ table, Spencer is a full-bodied, golden-hued Trappist ale with fruit accents, a dry finish and light hop bitterness. St. Joseph’s Abbey in Spenser, Massachusetts, is home to a community of Trappist monks and the first American Trappist brewery. Following the Benedictine tradition of ora et labor (prayer and work), the monks pursue a simple life of contemplative prayer, a manual labor and hospitality. The brewery helps support the monks and their charitable outreach.

Bottle at Craig’s. It pours cloudy golden with minimal head. The nose is earthy, doughy, light spice, toast, grain, mild pear/apple and faint candy. The taste is crisp, tart fruits, dough, toast, spice, hay, straw and light alcohol warmth with a lingering dry, warming finish. Medium+ body and fine prickly carbonation. Tasty enough, not quite enough depth for me, but not bad.

11.2oz bottle, shared with jstax. Thanks to a customer for giving this to me. AD 080 F08 is the code on the back of the bottle. Jstax poured for us, and gave me a glass with 5 inches of head. Thanks, jstax. Nice vibrant kinda darker orange color. Totally hazy. Some sediment visible at the bottom of the glass. Big slightly off-white head, but it soon dies down a bit, luckly. Leaves nice bubbly lace. Really cool kind of citrusy and earthy nose. Light herbal, light spicy in the flavor. Authentic belgian yeast notes, reminds me very much of the best belgian trappist ales. Very convincing. Even the texture is spot on. Medium-plus body, nice full feel. Smooth, kind of soft, lightly effervescent light to moderate strength carbonation, with a nice dry finish. Moderate sweet taste, light to moderate bitterness, and a some spicy taste. Love the fruity notes in this. I just had a peach beer right before, but I swear I’m getting some peach from this beer. Passionfruit, some pineapple type citrus. After some swishing, the carbonation dies down a bit and the texture becomes delightfully smooth and creamy.

My first ’Merican Trappist Ale thanks Mark King. The pour is a golden hue with a long lasting head and spotty lace. Get plenty of the standard Trappists yeast character even if it a bit tame (Abbey Single-ish). A touch of soapy dishwater ester on the nose. Nicely dry finish. Honestly it is quite meh overall.

Little cloudy amber to deep orange beer, creamy yellowish head, pretty stable, bit adhesive. Aroma: pretty yeasty, sweet ripe fruits, banana, little grassy, bit bready. MF: soft carbon, medium body. Taste: very yeasty, banana peal, bready, malts, bitter touch. Aftertaste: more banana, esters, little fruity, soft sweetness from the malts, little grassy.

Pours deep gold into a tulip. Bright white head with medium retention recedes to skim surface. Banana and bubblegum aromas. Dry with fruity banana upfront turning to mild pepper in the medium-length finish.
