COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Inspired by traditional refectory ales brewed by monks for the monks’ table, Spencer is a full-bodied, golden-hued Trappist ale with fruit accents, a dry finish and light hop bitterness. St. Joseph’s Abbey in Spenser, Massachusetts, is home to a community of Trappist monks and the first American Trappist brewery. Following the Benedictine tradition of ora et labor (prayer and work), the monks pursue a simple life of contemplative prayer, a manual labor and hospitality. The brewery helps support the monks and their charitable outreach.

Draft. Murky golden color, thin white edge head, an ugly beer. Aroma of raw bread dough, orange peel, funk. Taste is spiced citrus, bitter, could be better balanced.

Bottle. A bit excited to finally have the American trappist beer. Well, it looks quite nice, with an unclear, orange-colored body and a dense, finger-thick off-white head. The aroma is fruity and lightly sugary, with a spiced and herbal touch, canned peaches and some pine cones and grass. It’s full-bodied and quite effervescent, semi-dry. There’s canned peaches, white sugar, bitterness, some pine cones and a herbal hint in the flavor, all lasting for some time. Quite herbal bitter in the very end. A decent one indeed, although not at the same level as the older Trappist beers. But sure nice to taste. 150610

Bottle. Poured clear copper color with an average to large frothy white head that was lasting with excellent lacing. Moderate citrus hop and yeast aroma. Medium body with a smooth dry texture and soft carbonation. Medium to heavy sweet flavor with a medium to heavy sweet finish of moderate to long duration. My expectations where exceeded.
