Inspired by traditional refectory ales brewed by monks for the monks’ table, Spencer is a full-bodied, golden-hued Trappist ale with fruit accents, a dry finish and light hop bitterness. St. Joseph’s Abbey in Spenser, Massachusetts, is home to a community of Trappist monks and the first American Trappist brewery. Following the Benedictine tradition of ora et labor (prayer and work), the monks pursue a simple life of contemplative prayer, a manual labor and hospitality. The brewery helps support the monks and their charitable outreach.

Pre GBBF tasting at Chris and Ruth’s. Hazy gold beer with some tiny floaters. Good pale cream colour head. Palate is airy and a little dry, decent fine carbonation. Sweet floralness. Sweet spice. Thin grain. Modest citrus before an estery dry finish. Okay.

Draft. Murky golden color, thin white edge head, an ugly beer. Aroma of raw bread dough, orange peel, funk. Taste is spiced citrus, bitter, could be better balanced.

Bottle shared late-nite during RBWG 2016. Pours unclear gold with a creamy white head. Lots of doughy malt in the nose, some Belgian yeast, old tangerines. Medium sweet flavor with more doughy malts, yeast, grain husk, hay. Light to medium bodied with average carbonation. Sugary finish with some damp grains, dough, wheat, yeast, dry banana. So so.

Bottle. A bit excited to finally have the American trappist beer. Well, it looks quite nice, with an unclear, orange-colored body and a dense, finger-thick off-white head. The aroma is fruity and lightly sugary, with a spiced and herbal touch, canned peaches and some pine cones and grass. It’s full-bodied and quite effervescent, semi-dry. There’s canned peaches, white sugar, bitterness, some pine cones and a herbal hint in the flavor, all lasting for some time. Quite herbal bitter in the very end. A decent one indeed, although not at the same level as the older Trappist beers. But sure nice to taste. 150610
