500ml bottle, dark copper color, with a big frothy tan head, mild smokey, biscuity, caramel, toasted malty nose, with some meaty smoked bacon, smoked ham, beechwood, bran cereal muffin accents, with some light toffee, dried fruit notes in the aroma follows through on a medium-bodied palate with a good biscuity, caramelized, bready, toasted, light smoked maltines character, with some grainy cereal, bran muffin, faint dried fruity raisiny, buttery toffeeness flavours, leading towards a fruity drried rainsin, toasty maltiness finish. A bit weak in his smoky character!

Solid aroma of Weyerman smoked malt with caramel and berries. Pours a cloudy brown color with a medium beige head. Very good flavor of Weyerman smoked malt, caramel and berries. The body is medium with an oily texture and moderate carbonation. Good stuff!

Tried at Snallygaster Fest in D.C. Amber color with white head.. Smoke aroma. Flavor is some caramel and a lot of smoke flavor. Tastes like bacon.

A healthy beige head mostly stays above the clear copper with ruby tinges. Woohoo, more smokey than anticipated. There’s plenty of beechwood smoke in there, bringing forth woodsy, tobacco, leafy and earthy notes, but in a rather candied Munich malt profile where nuttiness has a vegetal lactone connotation and vanilla hints. From the nose, it smells like it’s going to be sweet. Yet in mouth, while its bock nature introduces a malt forward and hop timid nature, the generous smoke provides a nice counterbalance and in a way, so does the beer’s leanliness. It is fairly thin for a beer of this stature and this makes it seem less in your face caramelly sweet. Plenty of bready and cerealic nuances to the maltiness. Tasty product that can be regarded as an easy drinker, as a captivating food matcher and as a rather complex beverage on its own.

My Bottom Line :
This svelte Rauchbock shares wooden smoke and light Munich malt character, leading to more smokiness and spicy hops in the finish.

Further Personal Perceptions :
-A film of foam tops the misty dark amber.
-This is very easy drinking for a Bock.
-Subtle caramel sweetness adds body.
-This is not the most compelling Spezial brew, but it’s fun nonetheless for Rauchbier lovers.

500ml bottle from IPB.
Appearance : Deep clear mahogany with medium head. Short retention, minimal lacing.
Aroma : Big woody smoke with light ashes and overcooked caramel. Very light citrusy hoppy notes. Light woody spices. Some red dry fruits.
Taste : Smoke with caramel malt, light herbal hops. Finish smokey with caramel. Woody. Light spicy notes.
Palate : Carbonation is quite soft.
Overall : Not the most complex beer but fairly enjoyable. Nice persistent smoke on finish. Nice caramel. Quite nice. Got better with time. Maybe it was too cold at first.

Several glasses at Brauerei Spezial and Cafe Abseits in Nov. 2011: Deep ruby with a faint glimmer of rust. Creamy but broken eggshell head. Bright and secuctive bock aromas swirled with pumpernickel bread, molasses, liquefied toffee, rich smoke pungency and shades of coffee. Firm, lively, tickling carbonation. Stiff cookielike malt and potent smoke links up with ever deepening waves of lush melanoidins. Spicy hops gracefully splash the malty sweetness with captivating precision. Lusciously candyish and plummy bock character proportionately mirrors the smokiness. Delightful depth of sugary malt derivatives evoke notions of coffee and blackcurrant. Dab of plum along with a molasses astringency make themselves present, though the beer never becomes overly sweet. Lustrous flavors of malt continue as the sweetness wanes, lapping the tongue with more cookie, biscuit and toffee. Candyish firmness echoes the exuberant and punchy bock profile. Round and very clean finish is adorned with everlasting malt and a charcoal sharpness drizzled with toffee and creamed hazelnut coffee. Very complex and nicely balanced.

Brown 0.5 litre bottle, 6.9% ABV. best before 31 Mar 09, drank 17 Feb 09. A gift from Fred Waltman: I forget what he got in exchange. Poured into a La Chouffe tulip glass. Mahogany reddy/brown and clear for a rauchbier, sadly what little head arrived soon left. A small collar of light tan was all that remained. A slight burnt aroma, a bit like a smoked ham or bar-b-que briquette but not as pronounced. The taste was malty sweet with a hint of smoking jacket and cigars. As the beer warms the smokiness becomes more prevalent and begins to take over completely. Far from a rich, deep or creamy body, it does however have a presence. The alcohol is just about evident and it warms the mouth as the flavours begin to die away.

Rated both at Abseits and the brewery Nov 2011. Head is initially small, frothy, light brown, mostly diminishing. Body is dark brown. Aroma is moderately malty (roasted grain, toasted bread, caramel), with notes of smoked meat, fireplace, date, brown sugar, black tea. Flavor is moderately to heavily sweet, lightly bitter. Finish is lightly to moderately sweet, moderately bitter. Medium body, syrupy/watery texture, lively carbonation. Among Spezial’s best offerings. Not the most satisfying mouthfeel (as with most of their beers), but a very nice aroma and flavor balance.
