3.9 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 16/20
Several glasses at Brauerei Spezial and Cafe Abseits in Nov. 2011: Deep ruby with a faint glimmer of rust. Creamy but broken eggshell head. Bright and secuctive bock aromas swirled with pumpernickel bread, molasses, liquefied toffee, rich smoke pungency and shades of coffee. Firm, lively, tickling carbonation. Stiff cookielike malt and potent smoke links up with ever deepening waves of lush melanoidins. Spicy hops gracefully splash the malty sweetness with captivating precision. Lusciously candyish and plummy bock character proportionately mirrors the smokiness. Delightful depth of sugary malt derivatives evoke notions of coffee and blackcurrant. Dab of plum along with a molasses astringency make themselves present, though the beer never becomes overly sweet. Lustrous flavors of malt continue as the sweetness wanes, lapping the tongue with more cookie, biscuit and toffee. Candyish firmness echoes the exuberant and punchy bock profile. Round and very clean finish is adorned with everlasting malt and a charcoal sharpness drizzled with toffee and creamed hazelnut coffee. Very complex and nicely balanced.

3.9 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
In short: A medium smoky brown lager with a splendid malt backbone. Lovely.
How: Bottle 500ml, consumed one or two months after receiving it through private importation.
The look: Cloudy mahogany body with some small particles topped by a large beige head with medium retention and leaving lots of lacings on the glass.
In long: Nose is moderately smoky with a smoke sensation that is somewhere between smoked pork/leather and beach wood fire. Nice malts, full creamy mouthfeel, juicy caramel, fresh cookies, oily cashews, wet tobacco leafs, medium amount of wooden smoke. The type of malt backbone I would expect from the best Viennas (whatever this made-up style is, beers like Heater Allen Coastal). This beer is highly sessionnable. To my taste I thought the malts stole the show from the smoke in this beer, I almost wished it was even less smoked and more of a normal bock/Vienna, something I never thought I’d say about a Bamberg smoke. In North-America it is impossible to tell someone “I drank a Spezial beer” without sounding like your IQ is below 80.

Bottle sample. Has a dark cloudy amber colour with a medium lasting beige head. Has a pleasant and balanced smoky and sweet aroma, almost like smoked meat. The flavour also feels pleasant with a medium to heavy smokyness, and more of the sweet smoked meat that’s dominating this beer. The aftertaste is a bit sour and is lasting. Has a light and slick mouth feel, and a light bitterness. It’s naturally filled with smoke and is nice, but could maybe be richer and not so one dimensional.

3.8 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
Bottle. Pours a deep bronze-hued, slightly hazy nougat brown body with a small-ish white head. Nose is huge and slightly boozy tones of cured meat, smoked ham and sausages, with sweet, deep malty notes in the back. Taste is sharp and pungent tones of smoked meat, ham and cured game, with hints of tobacco, sweet malts, grain and caramel carefully detectable in the background. Slightly sour grainy aftertaste. Medium to full body, mild carbonation. A tasty and powerful rauchbier, which still manages to retain a good balance. I like it a lot.

2.7 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 10/20
0,5 l bottle from Bieropholie, served at cellar temperature in a tulip glass.
App.: Very deep copper with a fragile off-white head.
Aroma: A fair amount of meaty smoke tempered by nice rich maltiness, slightly bright and fruity, bready, toasty notes, slight mint/menthol, more balanced than the typical Bamberger Rauchbiers.
Palate: Medium body, organized effervescence (really).
Flav.: Mildly smoky with nice rich fruity, toasty, bready malts, a touch bright, a touch of mint/menthol, a little alcohol; dry with surprising bitterness and a lightly smoked, kinda harsh finish.
Not altogether pleasant.

Pours medium brown with enormous amount of lasting white head. Sweet malts wafting. Initial taste of malt and peat, much better balanced as it warmed. Very drinkable. Carbonation is appropriate, and a good mouthfeel. Very good smoked beer, with smoke not overwhelming.

3.6 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 14/20
Bottle: Poured a clear brown color ale with a large foamy head with good retention and some lacing. Aroma of light smoked malt with some dry caramel malt with light and subtle notes of residual sugar. Taste is also dominated by great caramel malt with light smoked malt notes and some light residual sugar notes. Body is lighter then expected with good carbonation. Easily drinkable without too much complexity and really not as much smoked malt as expected.

3.5 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20
