A healthy beige head mostly stays above the clear copper with ruby tinges. Woohoo, more smokey than anticipated. There’s plenty of beechwood smoke in there, bringing forth woodsy, tobacco, leafy and earthy notes, but in a rather candied Munich malt profile where nuttiness has a vegetal lactone connotation and vanilla hints. From the nose, it smells like it’s going to be sweet. Yet in mouth, while its bock nature introduces a malt forward and hop timid nature, the generous smoke provides a nice counterbalance and in a way, so does the beer’s leanliness. It is fairly thin for a beer of this stature and this makes it seem less in your face caramelly sweet. Plenty of bready and cerealic nuances to the maltiness. Tasty product that can be regarded as an easy drinker, as a captivating food matcher and as a rather complex beverage on its own.

UPDATED: JAN 15, 2015 Draught at source 12/2014. Well-balanced smoke (dried Schwarzwälder Schinken) & toffee in aroma give way to even more well-balanced Bock flavours of plum compote, maroni, gingerbread, spices, a liquorice lining. Good plain drinkability, for a Bock.

Draft at the brewery in Bamberg, November 2014. Clear chestnut brown with a medium off-white head. Papery, starchy, somewhat bland. Cara malt with light saltiness. Fizzy carbonation is brash on the tongue. Subtle paper smoke character. Lightly ashy more than meaty. Salty in the way of meaty jerky brine and liquid smoke. Served frigid so it takes some time to warm and open up but still it’s more simple than I recall, but it’s been 8 years between samples. From draft at In de Wildeman, Amsterdam in May 2006 I scored it 3.7.

Bamberger Bierwochenende, Bier Nr. 7. Vom Faß im Spezialkeller, Bamberg. - Tiefstes Rotbraun, rasch schwindender beigefarbener Schaum. In der Nase karamellige Süße, Blockmalz und ein Hauch von Rauch (Schwarzwälder Schinken). Im Antrunk Rosinensüße und Blockmalz; schwer aber nicht dick. Dezente Rauchnote; leichte dunkle Frucht. Mild rezent. Für ein Bockbier enorm leicht und süffig. Abgang fein fruchtig mit ganz leichter Zitrusnote, leicht grasig-pfeffriger Hopfen. - Süßes Blockmalz, dezenter Rauch, fruchtige Note und kühlender Hopfen in perfekter Harmonie. Vorzüglich!
