1.1 AROMA 1/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 1/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 4/20 flying_pig (609) - SCOTLAND - MAY 7, 2013
500ml Bottle (Good Spirits Co, Glasgow - £2.80):
A disgusting combination to smoked wood and an overpowering cured ham aroma that isn’t unlike smoky bacon crisps. There was a few malts coming through but it smelts truly appalling, probably the worst I’ve ever smelt.
Clear, mild looking amber with a thin white lacing on top that is about two millimetres tall before turning patchy.
Smoky wood and some lingering malts with some spice but again the overriding taste was a cured ham one that was disgusting and pretty much undrinkable. Not quite as bad as the smell but awful none the less.
Smooth & medium bodied with some spice. Very had to be unbiased here as the taste was so bad that the mouthfeel was never going to turn around the beers fortunes.
Definitely the worst tasting beer I’ve ever tried although perhaps not the absolute worst overall. About five different people at a party tried a sip of this and all formed similar opinions, this one was drain pour pure and simple.
3.4 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 13/20 neur0 (425) - GERMANY - MAY 3, 2013
3.3 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 13/20 Allen (2670) - SWITZERLAND - MAR 16, 2013
Bottled 50cl. Courtesy of bartlebier. Moderate smokiness. Light bodied. The tatse is smokier than the nose might suggest. This beer definitely falls short compared to brews from Heller. Thanks a lot bartlebier!
3.5 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 14/20 swoopjones (4192) - Buffalo, New York, USA - FEB 22, 2013
Draft at spezial, bamberg. Light copper pour, light smoke in aroma and flavor. Adds great dimension to flavor. Carmel malts and smoke work well together. Much tamer than schlenkerla, nice session ale
3.7 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20 Jamesthebrit (46) - Greenville, South Carolina, USA - FEB 9, 2013
The first lager I’ve had in like...a year. Here we go...
A: Smells just like a smoked sausage. Amazing aroma. Smooth and balanced.
A: Looks like a lager... light on bubbles. Crystal clear. Amber color.
T: While there isn’t anything bad about this, there isn’t anything great either. Well balanced with the smoke but drinks much like a soda water. For the style though, this is very nice.
P: Sits fine but its like water.
Overall for the style this is a pretty solid beer. It brings something unique to a lager and is overall smooth. But, being a lager it’s very light and there just aren’t the other flavors there that would make it something great (like the marzen version... that was great). If you’re new to beer check this out for sure. If you like ales... go for one of the other versions.
3.4 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 2/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 13/20 bartlebier (448) - Baden-Württemberg, GERMANY - JAN 27, 2013
50cl bottles from the brewery - also had it from tap in Bamberg. - Short smoked, with the typical unusual bacon aroma; a rather thin lager, which pours rather unspectacularly underneath, with slight bittering hops. Could use a bit more malt, but very drinkable lager like this -sessionable even.
3.7 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20 Russo (1244) - Campinas, BRAZIL - JAN 27, 2013
Bottle bought in Bamberg, Amber color with a nice tan head. Nose is sweet bacon. Nice light smoked flavor, very light carbonation. Mouthfeel is short smoked, with a little bitterness.
3.4 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 14/20 thunderhops (214) - Vermont, USA - JAN 7, 2013
Pours slightly hazy amber with small white head that dissipates quickly. Aroma is smoked ham, grains. Taste smoke, sweet malt, lively carbonation, sweet smoke lingering finish.
4.1 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20 ContemplateBeer (1124) - Louisville, Kentucky, USA - DEC 31, 2012
Aroma of meaty smoke, but some nice lager character (lemon, herbs, white grape) as well. Appearance is lightly cloudy gold with ever present, bubbly white head. Flavor is a nice balance of smoke and base lager; really well done here. Palate is medium, creamy and soft. Usually the smoke overtakes these beers for me, but this one is a great balance.
