3.6 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 14/20
A really quality look to this rauchbier, with a dark, orange brown color, slightly cloudy, with a fluffy head. Nose was smoky, but in a way very different from some smoked beers. Flavor was balanced between a pilsner type flavor and the smoke, occurring on the tongue in that order. Overall, a strange and nice rauchbier, but not as good as some others.

3.6 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20
Dirty amber color, murky, minimal white head rapidly turns into a ring. Aroma is surprising by it's low intensity. It's nevertheless packed with subtleties. The smokiness here seems to be expressed through leather hints. There's also a cerealic thing going on here. In mouth, this is very easy to drink, intensily malty and refreshing. Above average carbonation and lagerish thin-medium body. Highly drinkable, but not as expressing as I had hoped.

4 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
UPDATED: AUG 2, 2011 The wooden cask version at the brewery has a better mouthfeel than the bottle obviously as it is fed by natural carbonation, and so the brew satisfies a bit more than the bottle imho... Beechwood smoke lingers nicely into a toasted finish for a quenching Rauchbier, more süffig than Schlenkerla’s...

3.9 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
UPDATED: NOV 28, 2006 Toasted malt and a peppery spiciness mixed with a mild smokiness in the nose. Slightly hazy golden orange colour with a small, dense-bubbled head that mostly diminishes. Musky, barnyard and smoke flavours with a cereal crunch reminiscent of a czech pils. Toasty, lightly grainy malt character. Medium light body with good carbonation. Bottle. Resampled (Bottle BB150806) with MartinT, muzzlehatch and Olivier_MTL. Original rating 7-3-8-3-15=3.6 * *

1.7 AROMA 3/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 3/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 5/20
On tap. Amber color with small white head. Smells like burnt malt, smoke, and bacon. Tastes much the same. Ew. Not my thing at all. When I want meat I prefer to have it in solid form.

3.7 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 16/20
UPDATED: AUG 20, 2004 Nice orangey amber color, med fizzy head, lightly fading, no lacing. Light malty aroma with a mild campfire smoked sausage complement in the nose. Smokier flavor, medium vienna style malts are present for a full nearly thick malt palate. Carbonation is somewhat fizzy but without a strong bite. An herbal hoppiness rises near the finish, which is well balanced and firm.
Updated comments: some weird green olivey sourness apparent, with an unfortunate emptiness of palate, watery finish. After awhile, and some slight warming, the sweeter malts come through a little better but the finish remains thin. The sourness begins to meld with the smoke to hint at something akin to a Tennessee sour mash whiskey crossed with a smokier scotch. Curious. I've left the numbers alone.

2.6 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 9/20
Amber clear lager, thin head. Curious aroma, vinyl and smoke. Adequate body; this isn't a beer that makes its name on its palate. The smokiness comes through with a flavor that makes me hungry for some sausage, but I didn't find it overall that compelling.

3.2 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 13/20
Medium sized white head, short lived. Hazy copper color. lightly smokey nose, bandaid. Medium body. Smoke flavor is faint. Phenolic, fried electrical wiring. Finish is medium sweet. Reminds me of the time the wiring harness under the dash of my 65 mustang burned up. something about that flavor/aroma i kinda like.

4 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
On tap, copper brown color with large wite head. Aroma of pilsener and helles, plenty of malt and hops with slight smokiness. Body starts out like a medium to full body helles, nice in it of itself. But then the smoke kicks in. I tasted iced tea, ash, hickory, other burning wood, seaweed, salt, smoke and more smoke in the aftertaste. This is one schizophrenic beer. Fairly dry finish. Makes me want to go rerate that other big smoked beer, or eat some kielbasa...
