Made with barley malt cured by natural beechwood smoke right in the brewery, in the old tradition of Bamberg.

Dark gold copper color with a nice puffy head and good lacing. Toasty malt and haylike aroma. Medium bodied with a malty smoky flavor, nutty and dryish into the finish. If you found the aggressive smokiness of the Schlenkerla smoke beers to be a bit of a turnoff, give this well balanced little jewel a try. Nice!

Nicely malty, woody and dry smoky aroma, some faint toasty bread notes and caramel sweetness, very lightly meaty. Light-medium copper color, filtered, average head, not much lace. Flavor profile is fairly mellow, some sweet and lightly nutty maltiness mixed with the smokiness and lightly herbal, spicy hops. Finishes as clean as only a lager can. Body is light-medium, palate is effervescent and a bit thin. Satisfying, ultimately. Recommended.

Bottle. Thank god for this beer, Otter Creek copper sucked bigtime. Good dry, herbal smoky lager. Grassy hops, very well balanced, really nice.

Hazy, amber apearance with a small head that left little lacing. After the initial dose of smokiness, the aroma developed more of a pumpernickel bread-like quality. Taste was not as intense as some other over-the-top rauchbiers, but it still offers the woodsy, earthy, leathery attributes that smoked beer fans have come to enjoy. Well balanced, modestly hopped finish.

UPDATED: APR 17, 2006 AOBF 04. Bottle. Yellow-golden, clear, but almost syrupy looking. Aroma of spicy lager yeast, full flavorful smoke (wood smoke, smoked fish, salt, pork rinds, earthiness). Flavor is full of charcoal notes, but mixed with good malt sweetness, quite creamy, very smooth. I’m not finding much lager quality, but that’s ok, because the smoke flavor is great (wouldnt expect any less from Bamberg). Other than that, not too much else goin on. Some light nuttiness, hints of earth.

color is hazy deep golden, malts are light, smoke is moderate and complementary, instead of dominating. aroma is quite spicy! flavor is smoky, a bit cardboardy and medicinal...but still damn good...perfect amount of smoke.

I am rating this beer as a good example of the style. It is an acquired taste, kind of like a Bavarian weissbier, but for its style it is good. The smokiness of the wood used to dry the barley is very prominent and this beer goes well with ham or sausage, but is not a refreshing, thirstquencher in my estimation. Still, Bamberg is known for its rauchbier and it must be tried whilst there.

At first I was really impressed with the smoked taste but after a few minutes I began to struggle with it. The smokiness overpowers any other flavours eventially making it a difficult beer to drink.

Orange amber. Off white head. Salty smoke nose. Carmelized malts, nutty, leather, toasted malts. A perfect underlying smoke smoke character, subdued but always there. A very nice brew, perfect with smoked foods. I will be searching for the breweries other offerings with anticipation!

Copper body with dense miniscule suspended particulates. Aroma of smoke and burnt pumpkin. Decent flavor of squash, apples, and smoked bacon. An enjoyable smoke beer.
