04.16.05 Brewtopia ’05, 500ml bottle. Beery beer first, smokey beer second. Good dose of smoke on nose. Smoke flavors do not let down though are not in great balance with graininess. Maybe a little raw, a little burnt. A quaffer.

Amber color, Smoked ham aroma. Full bodied, malty, a light smokiness in the flavor. Hints of peach and butter. Fairly low on carbon. Excellent, would be very suited as my daytime beer.

Aroma of smoked salmon and grease. Unfiltered. I was somewhat dreading this, b/c smoke beers seem to be a love/hate thing with most people. It took a while to get used to (at least half the bottle), but somehow it managed to be both filling and refreshing. Mouthfeel very heavy as it warmed. Heavy smoke/meat/fish component, lighter touch of malt. Slightly bitter, oily finish. Kind of like sitting around a campfire breathing in woodsmoke after finishing a hunk of savoury meat that was roasted over that same campfire. I can see where if you weren’t into smoked foods you would hate this kind of beer. But it’s actually pretty tasty.

Clear amber body with a moderately sized, big bubbled head. Interesting smoky aroma. Not as smoky as Schlenkerla, but definitely stronger than a lot of smoked beers I’ve had. Smoked sausage, campfire and mesquite-grilled chicken all seem present, with undertones of caramel and grains. The body is moderate and nothing special, though expectedly so. The flavor isn’t bad, as the smoke is less dominate than expected from the nose. Smoky and malty with almost no hop presence. Not really my cup of tea.

3.5 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 14/20
Interesting, to say the least. I wasn’t expecting the smokey aroma, kind of like standing downwind of someone smoking cigars, not too strong, but definately noticeable. Great color, I think that is the best attribute. A nice smokey chestnut. Pleasant flavor, but a little dry. Quite a good pairing with baked brie or camembert.

This beer has an understated smoky flavor combined with a faint roasted maltiness. Being a lager it is thin in body and is mildly hopped. Those looking for a more dominant smoked flavor should try one of their darker beers.

3.3 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 13/20
Bottle. Aroma is metallic and of cousre smoked. not an overpowering aroma though. There are some weird minty hints in the nose as well. Smells like tires. Transparent dark copper color with a small quickly dissipating off-white head. This beer is mild and malty with delicate smoke flavors complimenting and balancing the maltiness well. The problem with this is that it is quite bland, unexciting, and very thin. It also doesn’t look like a rauchbier. It is very drinkable, though, and not overly dominated by the smoke.

500ml bottle. lable reads Best Before ’6’ ?? I’ve held on to it for at least 9months or so. Pours amber/copper color, with lots of ’ash’ in suspension. Initially the aroma reminds me of a wet ashtray, but as I sit with it, it goes more to chops on a grill. Flavor is surprisingly malty of the vienna/munich type. Really nice. Almost getting cinnamin in the finish as the ashtray thing turns into something really enjoyable. nice malt/smoke mix...very mellow and extremely palatable, the only complaint is that the finish at times seems a bit watery.

This was pretty decent. I am not sure if I had this or the Marzen, but from the description, I am pretty sure this was the one I tried. I already had the Marzen and this seemed different.

Golden orange, crystal clear with a small white head. Nose is malt up front but backed by a hefty smack of smoke which becomes more prevalent in the flavor. Definitely strongly in the rauchbier tradition but much more subtle than some other examples--you can actually taste the beer here.
