Wonderful frothy head and slighty cloudy with yeast. Great aroma and taste, strong but not overpowering. I love German beers

3.6 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20
Medium head, quickly diminishing; cloudy dark amber body. Nose is slightly fruity and quite smoky and malty, though not the bbq-lovers-dream that the Hellertrum beers are. Flavor quite good, with a distinct though not overpowering smoked-meat tinge all the way through, coupled with fresh lager graininess. Fairly full for a lager, though I feel it could have been still deeper. Somewhat above average for the style, which is among my favorites.

4 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 16/20
UPDATED: NOV 13, 2003 This beer rauchs!
Smells of malt and beechwood smoke. Light yeast notes.
Sparkling, clear amber lager. Creamy, off-white head.
The flavor starts sweet and smokey. The hops hit slightly on the backside, but never balance out the smoky-sweet maltiness. Medium bodied with fizzy carbonation and a watery mouthfeel. Lengthy, astringent, smokey finish.

3.3 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 13/20
UPDATED: MAR 18, 2012 Bottle (BB Jun 2012).
Head is initially average sized, frothy, off-white, mostly diminishing.
Body is hazy medium amber.
Aroma is moderately malty (toasted bread, caramel), lightly hoppy (flowers, apricot), with a notes of smoke, light note of metal.
Flavor is moderately sweet, lightly bitter.
Finish is lightly to moderately sweet, moderately bitter.
Light to medium body, watery/velvety texture, lively carbonation.
A bit on the sweet side, could be better balanced, and there seems to be a little bit of metal in this sample/batch, but overall it’s a decent example. This has never really been a "wow" beer, though.

3.4 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 14/20
Plenty smokey aroma followed by a thick caramel malt palate. It’s a touch too sweet and could be a bit crisper. Nonetheless, it’s a pretty interesting concoction.

3.7 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20
tastes like a big mushroom, prawn and bacon fryup. clean and smooth, and not as big as the other spezials, and maybe a bit too sweet.

4.3 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 17/20
UPDATED: MAR 6, 2004 Lovely stuff. Nice deep amber. Beautifully smoky nose, also some fruitiness and peat. Flavor is very nice, quite smoky, has a surprising banana/clove character, is a bit what I'd think a smoked weizenbock might taste like. Body has a nice heft. Smoke good.

4.2 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 18/20
UPDATED: APR 6, 2004 Great underlying ale! Delicious and lightly smoked. Very drinkable and perfect for a newbie to the style. Worth seeking out. Rerate: Again, this is a worthy intro to Rauchbiers for someone who's gonna be freaked and put-off by a Schlenkerla. The Spezial is mild and lightly smoked, with a touch of burnt pork/bacon. Enjoyably drinkable for the style.

4.2 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 17/20
Hazy amber with tons of suspended particles. Old sample? Thin white edge head. Light carbonation. Muted Beechwood smoke aroma over a crispness and toasty malt aroma. Mellow body, slightly watery but medium bodied simultaneously. Evident but not invasive smokiness. Has a light Pils flavor beneath it. Crisply hoppy with toasty malts and bits of sweetness here and there. Is this a smoked Kellerbier? Tinges of fruitiness ride the malt body and lingering hop bitterness. Smoke recedes a bit and becomes a mere spectator. Softens a bit as it sits. Traces of wet cardboard are smothered by the balanced flavor. Finishes maltier, less smoky and slightly yeasty. Wow. If this sample is old a fresh sample must be mind numbing.
