Made with barley malt cured by natural beechwood smoke right in the brewery, in the old tradition of Bamberg.

Clear yellow color, short head. Aroma is typical smoked, bit hoppy and bit malty. Taste is a nice smoked lager, bit sweet and malty. Very nice.

Dark copper color, with the aroma of a newly lit campfire, and the smell of fresh logs waiting to be added - many rauchbiers, in my opinion, wind up tasting like bacon, but this one finds a nice balance - it has enough sweetness to mellow out the smoke, like a marshmallow burned over flaming hickory - the finish is hops and smoke, with a lingering, bock-ish, caramel flavor - nice beer.

Draught at Beer Circus, Croydon. Mostly malty, this has definate hints of smoke. This is, however, not half as smokey as the Schlenkerla beers.

Clear brown coloured. almost no head. Smokey aroma, some malts. Very nice smokey flavour, balanced with some sweetness and malts. Good brew.

UPDATED: MAY 12, 2005 The color is a copper with a little bit of cloudiness. It has a little bit of head around the edges of my mug. Aroma was initially a little soapy. Aroma is nice and sweet. Makes me think of honey barbecue sauce. The taste is fairly light. It has notes of wood and sweet apples in the background. The smoke is hardly detectable. Another light and refreshing brew with smoke. Nice slick mouthfeel that is slightly thin.

Deep orange copper - clear bodied, topped with a smokey tan head, great lacing. Aroma - at first it almost seemed frutiy sweet, but then turned into smoked cheese - like an aged smoked gouda - awesome. Body was on the thin side - couldnít keep up with the intensely smoked malt flavors. This ends with a charred wood flavor on the roof of my mouth, and I like it for some unknown reason.

Majestic Color looking like a mixture between Heinz 57 and Grapefruit Juice. Head falls quickly. Some lacing. Suspended particles everywhere. The smoky aroma takes over everything else trying to come out in the aroma. Mainly, the sweet and crisp malts and the "clean" scents. The smokiness is nice, providing most of the flavor but still leaving room for much more. Lots of sweet malts and fruitiness come about along with some nuttiness as well. The hops are crisp. Very clean flavors and very drinkable. Low carbonation but it seems right. The smokiness is very mild compared to the few other rauchbiers I have had, in fact, towards the end it was barely evident at all. I liked it that way. Good beer.

Nice meatty aroma. Color is amber, head dies quick. Taste is sweet, slightly smokey. The real strength of the smoke comes in the finish, which is a little different than the American smokey beers Iíve tried. This is nice, people need to brew more of this style.

ppearance: cloudy, solidly amber hue, adorned with a generous, meringue-ish, creamy head. Aroma: soft, before being the smokiness slowly unfolds and grows...whereís the salmon, anyway? Taste: mild, easy, minimal hops, adequate malt, this seems, underneath the smoke, to be a perfectly servicable dunkel lager, smooth and eager-to-please, but the smokeís what itís all about, dominating every inch of the experience, taking control with the first sip. This actually fades and mellows after a time, but never dies, and lingers on the palate. This is the first rauchbier Iíve had that was a simple lager underneath, the others being bocks, weizens, marzens (thinking of Schlenkerla here, which also has a bigger smokey character, if I recall) and ales. Donít think it works as well with a lager, perhaps thereís less in the way of other characteristics to play with the smokey content. In any case, for what it was, this was pretty nice, and the 500 ml bottle went down surprisingly fast!

draft at the old toad: subtle meaty sweet smoke aroma lifting from a clear amber colored beer. very thin bodied and watery with a subtle smoke background. Not much to talk about, really..not nearly as smokey as it should be..maybe some fruit notes come through, but maybe not.
