luckygirl (1212), Longmont, Colorado, USA May 18, 2008 Updated: May 24, 2008 Bottled. 0:03 on label. Beer is clear, light golden brown with a moderately sized, beige, frothy/creamy, diminishing but mostly lasting head. The aroma is malty with light notes of toasted grain, cracker; Hoppy with a light note of herbs, intermittent trace of honeysuckle; Light savory note of meaty smoke, trace of corn. The flavor is lightly sweet, lightly acidic/dry with an average-length, lightly dry/acidic, trace bitter finish. The body is light, the texture is watery and the carbonation is average. Basic, but refreshing and engaging.
Ale_Drinker (1073), Sunnyvale, California, USA Oct 7, 2008 Pours clear deep amber with a thin head. Aroma is mostly carmel malt. I detect just a hint of smoke. Flavor is where the smoke really comes through. Not overpowering but definitely present. The beer is still very drinkable and quite refreshing. Nice! CharlesDarwin (1409), State College, Pennsylvania, USA Sep 27, 2008 500mL Bottle. Interesting herbal tree nose. Very woodsy hemlock bark, ferns and some sandy flowers. Very earthy, with a touch of brand new basketball sneakers. Leaves me with a confused feeling of being stuck in the shoe section of Shopko or lost in a Hemlock/Yellow Birch forest. I’m not sure. Pour a lightly hazed burnt orange, with a thin rim of tan above. Flavor is peculiar. The smoked has settled and morphed into something else. Some smoke phenols, light bread, and more fresh earth. Rotting poplar logs and more sneakers. Peculiar. I’m not sure how into this particular smoked beer I am. I want more smoke. More pig fat. More barbeque. Otherwise, it has lager-like crispness and some faint hoppy character. But this isn’t as pleasurable as other german smoked beers I’ve had. Wulfstan (481), California, USA Sep 22, 2008 This is ok but not really my thing. It is copper with a brown hint, medium light tan head soo thins to lasting thin top. The smell is roasty grain and toast with some caramelized fruit. The taste has a clear but very ight smokiness that seems to just add to or develope the overall quality rather than dominate or define it. It has a smoky-toasted grain element, hint of dark chocolate and caramel and dried fruit, yeasty bread, mineral water. There is a light burnt bitterness that becoms stronger - a little too strong - in the finish. It’s rather bland and thin to me but my wife likes it. fidel (208), Livermore, California, USA Sep 20, 2008 Light amber, simple, smoky, malty, little nutty, little caramel, slight funk, dry. jfb (74), Freising, Germany Sep 14, 2008 (bottle) dark, hazy amber colour, frothy off-white head. aroma of buttermilk, smoke, pale malts and caramel. smooth, buttery-smoky taste. dry, salty finish, medium body and carbonation, not my cup of tea.
